In recognition of this year's Fire Prevention Week theme, "Charge into Fire Safety," we're revisiting an important video produced by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal.

The video was made following a fire in Calabash that destroyed a detached garage. The fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery for a hand tool that had been left on a charger.

Lithium-ion batteries are a part of our everyday lives, and therefore we should take the appropriate precautions to ensure that we are using and charging them in as safe of a manner as possible.

We have been blown away by the response to our recent hiring announcement. In approximately one week, we received an outstanding number of applications from qualified candidates interested in joining our department. Because we have developed a strong pool of qualified applicants from which we anticipate being able to fill our current vacancies, we have officially closed the application period for our full-time and part-time firefighter positions.

Our hiring process is already underway. We have begun conducting interviews and physical abilities testing and anticipate extending conditional job offers by the end of next week.

Sanitary Sewer Collections System Smoke Testing – Village at Calabash 2

Brunswick County Public Utilities will be conducting smoke testing of the sanitary sewer collections system in Calabash, in the Village at Calabash 2 Subdivision. The testing may be ongoing for multiple days and is tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday, October 7th, 2026 , between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM each day the testing is being conducted. The testing should be completed by October 16th, 2026. Please be aware that you may see smoke emitting from the ground, manholes, sewer piping, roof vents, or gutters. To prevent the possibility of smoke entering your home, ensure water has been run in your sinks and showers/tubs to put water in your P-traps. This acts as a blockage to keep smoke from coming out of the drains in your home.

🔋 CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY!

Phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other rechargeable devices are part of everyday life. During Fire Prevention Week, remember these simple charging habits that can help prevent fires:

🔌 CHEAP CHARGER? DON’T CHANCE IT.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🛏️ SOFT SURFACE? HARD PASS.
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk, or bare floor. Avoid charging on beds, couches, pillows, or other soft surfaces.

🔋 FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG.
When your device is fully charged, unplug it.

🚲 FOR TOOLS AND RIDES, CHARGE OUTSIDE.
When possible, charge larger items such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside. Never block an exit with a device that is charging.

⚠️ FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.
Stop using a device or battery if it:
• Feels unusually hot
• Starts to swell
• Smells strange
• Leaks
• Smokes
• Makes popping or hissing sounds

✈️ ON A FLIGHT? KEEP IT IN SIGHT.
When you're on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while they're charging. If you notice a problem with your device, tell a flight attendant immediately.

CALABASH FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HIRING
FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME FIREFIGHTERS

The Calabash Fire Department is accepting applications for one (2) full-time firefighter positions and approximately three part-time firefighter positions.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing fire protection, rescue, and non-transport EMS at the EMT-Basic level across a 36-square-mile district in southwestern Brunswick County, North Carolina. Our department responded to 1,949 calls in 2025, serving a community experiencing significant residential and commercial growth.
Full-time firefighters receive:
• Starting salary of $52,500 annually.
• Department-paid employee-only health, dental, and vision insurance.
• A 457-retirement plan with an automatic department contribution based on a percentage of pay, plus an additional matching contribution.
• A 48/96 shift schedule: 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off.

As a nonprofit department, Calabash Fire isn’t eligible to participate in the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System. We support our employees’ retirement plans through the department-funded contributions and matching benefit described above.

Part-time firefighters earn $18 per hour and are expected to work a minimum of 36 hours per month.

Minimum qualifications include NC Firefighter certification (or equivalent), Haz Mat Level 1 Responder, and NC EMT-Basic (or equivalent eligible for reciprocity in NC).

We have established a culture where professionalism is expected, and firefighters have a meaningful voice in their daily operations and the equipment they use. Our newest fire engine, anticipated for delivery in November 2026, demonstrates that approach. A committee of firefighters from various ranks designed the apparatus, ensuring every seated riding position was represented. Their input shaped an engine with a low hose bed, all hose deployments from the rear, and a comprehensive lighting package that includes a Roto-Ray. These features reflect the experience and ideas of the firefighters who will use the truck. That same opportunity to contribute is part of our daily culture.

The department plans to construct a third fire station within the next two to five years, which would require additional staffing. Although the project has not yet been approved, it reflects our commitment to preparing for the needs of our growing community.
We are looking for firefighters who take pride in their work, accept responsibility, and want to contribute to the future of their department.

Always training……..five Calabash firefighters recently obtained advanced rescue training at the Holmatro Total Rescue-Tactics Workshop sponsored by Spartan Fire and held in Aynor, SC. During the two-day, 16-hour class, participants received extensive hands-on practical training along with targeted classroom lessons. The specialized techniques taught and practiced included vehicle lifting, stabilization and extrication, high directional shoring, and structural shoring. Check out these photos. Our firefighters are continually training so they can better serve the community!

So proud of our Fire Engineer Jerry Moore who was honored as the Calabash Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year at the recent Calabash Elks First Responder Dinner Dance. Jerry joined recipients from other local first responder agencies who were singled out by their departments for outstanding contributions to the community and their departments. In recommending Jerry for this award, Chief McGee noted that he not only serves as an experienced fire engineer, operating all of the Calabash apparatus, but also willingly works overtime so other firefighters can take well-deserved time off, serves as liaison to the fire department mechanic to ensure that our trucks remain ready for service, and uses his well-honed technical skills to complete wiring projects on department vehicles, saving us thousands of dollars over the years. He also helps with fire gear inventory and has reorganized the gear storage room to make it neater and more functional. Congratulations Jerry!

From today's 9/11 memorial ceremony at Brunswick Community College-the ringing of a bell in four sets of five is a traditional signal in the fire service used to honor firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
