Northern Elephant Seal pups in the care of our Marine Mammal Rescue Team are learning to secure and consume fish in our larger pool. Most of the “Ellie” pups in care are now feeding themselves with confidence and gusto, and enjoying interacting with the water as the weather heats up!

“Green,” pictured here, peeks under the surface of the pool and blows a few bubbles in a video taken by our team earlier this week.

Swipe to see the grow-up glow-up! ✨✨✨

Our early-season babies, like Striped Skunks, are reaching young adulthood. Some patients that entered our care this spring as infants are already back out in the wild! These skunks have a little farther to go but are proving their independence with stomping and spraying. Their use of defensive skills shows exactly what we want to see; wild, untamed behavior that gives a second chance at life free in the outdoors.

There’s just 24 hours left be part of our wild beginnings!

Check out the link in our bio to help us care for thousands of patients this year; especially our most vulnerable injured and orphaned young animals. You can shop our registry and pick exactly what you want to donate, knowing it will have immediate purpose during our busy season!

We hope your weekend plans include being close to family and friends! Many people head to the outdoors over holiday weekends; if you see wildlife in need while you’re out, remember that CWC is open every day for patient intakes, because compassion doesn’t take the day off.

If you find wildlife in distress in LA county or the Conejo Valley, call (310) 458-9453. Our phone tree will issue you a line to text a photo to so that our team can assess and give you next next steps.

Can you spot the sea lion? 🦭

Rescuing marine mammals requires adaptability, expertise and caution; especially in Malibu, where large rock formations and cliffsides create safety hazards for the humans and animals involved in a rescue. Each report of a potential animal in distress is carefully assessed by our team to determine the necessity and possibility of rescue. There are countless dynamic factors; What is the animal’s condition, size and species? Where are they located? How busy is the beach with potential stressors like people and pets? Is their injury dehabilitating, or are they just likely to disappear into the water upon our arrival?

There’s no chance of rescue without you. The sooner we receive reports, the more time we have to assess the situation and gather our team. Call or text (310) 924-7256 for animals in distress on the beach in Malibu, and you could help us save a life.

There are over 400 patients in care with CWC right now, many of them little more than infants. These delicate little lives require proper housing, feeding, cleanliness and enrichment to grow up strong and wild.

You can help us raise them to release! Follow the link in our bio to see our wishlist for nursery necessities.

They're here! Spring is in full swing, and our enclosures are full to bursting with young wild animals in need of rehabilitation. California Wildlife Center is Los Angeles County's largest wildlife rehabilitation facility; operating for nearly thirty years, we serve our community by accepting rescued wildlife for full service veterinary care at no cost to the rescuer. We receive no sustaining government funding and are powered by the passion of caring members of the public.

If you share our wish for a better world for wildlife, please consider shopping our registry to support us at this busy time of year or donating on our website!

Your home can be part of the solution. During Wildfire Preparedness Month, create defensible space: clear dry leaves and debris, trim vegetation away from structures and keep gutters/roofs free of buildup. Small actions help reduce risk and support safer emergency responses.

Tiny bird, big voice! Young raptors like this Merlin aren’t shy when it comes to asking for food. Vigorous begging helps them get what they need from their parents in the wild, and from caretakers while at CWC.

Let your colors show!

Our Marine Mammal team identifies their Northern Elephant Seal patients with a non-toxic mark placed on their head temporarily while they are in care. This allows staff to properly track their appetite, energy level, weight and more while in care.
