A group of youth volunteers spent recent weeks planting thousands of native trees on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā as part of an effort aimed at restoring dryland habitat for endangered native plant and bird species including the Kiwikiu bird, which numbered only 500 at last report.

Volunteering is its own reward… but this isn't so bad either.

The bleachers were full of students Friday morning at Mountain Crest High School's basketball gym. After all of the announcements were made for upcoming events at the assembly, one senior was honored at center court in front of her peers and recognized for her volunteer efforts in the community.
