Here are 5 myths about human trafficking that we have debunked.

🔹Myth 1: Human trafficking always involves kidnapping.
💥Truth 1: Most victims are trafficked by people they know: family, friends, partners, through manipulation and coercion.

🔹Myth 2: It only happens in other countries.
💥Truth 2: Human trafficking occurs in every country, including the US — in cities and rural areas. It can happen anywhere.

🔹Myth 3: Trafficking is only about s*x.
💥Truth 3: Labor trafficking is just as common. It impacts agriculture, domestic work, construction, and more.

🔹Myth 4: Victims can just leave if they want to.
💥Truth 4: Traffickers use threats, debts, psychological abuse, and control of documents to keep people trapped.

🔹Myth 5: It is easy to spot human trafficking.
💥Truth 5: There’s no single “look” of a trafficking victim. Many appear to live normal lives while suffering in secret.

Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Human trafficking is defined under U.S. law as the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel someone into commercial s*x or labor against their will.

It can happen to anyone, but some people are more vulnerable than others. Risk factors include:

✨Recent migration or relocation
✨Substance use
✨Mental health challenges
✨Involvement in the child welfare system
✨Being a runaway or experiencing homelessness

At EverWell, we take a survivor-centered approach. Our team includes survivors themselves, anti-trafficking professionals, and leaders in higher education who walk alongside our students with support, care, and expertise.
