Hi everyone!

One of our Pulaski County residents, Marissa Jackson (formerly known as Marissa Brown), is graduating from the Full Spectrum Birth Justice Doula program. She would love the community’s support!

Having a Doula in Pulaski County will be beneficial for all surrounding areas. Studies show that having a Doula present during childbirth is strongly associated with better birth outcomes. So if you can, please come show support for the one who will be supporting families in your area. Click the link below to RSVP:

As she steps into this new chapter, Marissa is also gathering supplies to donate to her future clients. If you’re able, she would be deeply grateful for any donations of items that could support her work as a Doula, such as:

🧺 Blankets, swaddles, or baby items
πŸ“š Pregnancy, birth, or postpartum books
πŸ§˜πŸ½β€β™€οΈ Self-care items for moms
πŸ’Ό Storage totes, bags, or organizing supplies

If you have anything you’d like to contributeβ€”or know someone who mightβ€”please feel free to reach out to her directly. Thank you to those who have already sent gifts; your support means the world!

To make things easier, she also has a Walmart registry, and all donations will be shipped directly to her:

Recently, a group of NAACP and Southern Illinois community members attended a study tour to The Legacy Sites in Montgomery, AL.

The Legacy Sites include the Legacy Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice (aka the lynching memorial), and the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park.

This was a powerful and sobering experience - the Sites document the treatment of African Americans from the Middle Passage to mass incarceration today. On the final night, participants gathered to debrief and discuss strategies to use the knowledge gained to create positive change in Southern Illinois communities.

The group came away from the experience with a renewed fire for educating our youth on history and advocating for racial equity.
