There are some dogs that come thru the Harrison County Dog Pound’s doors in Cadiz, OH and deep down, we know no one is coming for them. We hope we’re wrong; we wait for the phone to ring or the next person to walk in because we can’t help but hope someone is searching. But in our hearts, we know. ASHER is one of those dogs. He was abandoned on a dirt road where there is little sign of life. Just wild life, a well pad, the occasional vehicle that zooms by, and the dog pound. Someone took this young dog and left him out there. ALONE. Thankfully, ASHER was spotted before the coyotes we hear howling at night found him. We don’t like to think about what could have happened to him if he hadn’t been spotted and if he hadn’t eventually trusted us enough to slip a leash on him. Perhaps the saddest thing is that ASHER is about a year old. He’s barely had a chance to live, yet he’s already learned that sometimes the people you depend on just disappear. Understandably, ASHER can be a little hesitant when he meets new people. He needs time to decide if you, too, are going to disappoint him. But, we’ve found a shortcut to his courage and evidently it’s paved with treats. ASHER is very treat motivated and it doesn’t take long for him to trust. That’s when you get to meet the dog hiding behind the uncertainty…and what a sweet dog that is. ASHER is very affectionate. He’s a cuddler, a snuggler, and a firm believer that laps don’t come with size restrictions. Don’t bother telling him they do. If you’re one of his favorite people, he’ll climb right in and act like this is exactly where he’s meant to be. And maybe it is. We don’t know yet how ASHER does with cats or kids, but he seems to enjoy the company of the other dogs at the pound. ASHER survived being abandoned. But he deserves to do more than survive. We want him to know what it’s like to be cherished and to wake up each morning knowing his people are still there. Someone discarded this boy. On the side of a dirt road. We want someone else to look at this boy’s sweet face and decide to give him everything he should have had from the start: a forever family.
