The recent World Cup soccer matches, hosted by the United States (U.S.), provided an opportunity for many people to visit the U.S. for the first time. Various sources at home have told those from Europe that America is a declining country, the infrastructure is falling apart, there’s high crime and greed, and that U.S. citizens are cold and unfriendly. While you can find all of these problems in the U.S., they don’t describe the majority of the country. After spending several weeks in the U.S., most European visitors experienced the complete opposite of what they’d been told. The people in the U.S. were very friendly and helpful; everything is so large and well-kept [stores, roads, travel centers], even the police are friendly!
Many people have a similar experience with God’s character. Lies are frequently told about God, and many also experience a distorted view of God through unfaithful Christian witness. We’re called to tell the truth about God’s character (Rev 14:6-12), especially in this end time; in fact, “the last message of mercy to be given to the world is a revelation of God’s character of love.” [Christ Object Lessons p.416]
When those who love the truth discover God’s character, they realize that they’ve believed Satan’s lies, told through many channels, and they abandon their distorted picture of God. Sadly, many don’t love the truth. It’s inconvenient, often unpopular, and requires change in the believer. We don’t let that deter us; all need to hear and see the truth that God loves them and wants to transform them back into His image.
