“Buy the Bananas”

A chapter in our P.A.L.S. training is “Christian Caregiving.” In the book there is an example of a man who came upon and car accident. The policeman told him to stay in his car but he could see an older gentleman who was laying in the road. He got out of his car and went over to the man. He held his hand and asked if he could pray with him. The older man was a Christian and readily agreed. When he left in the ambulance, he had such gratitude for the stranger who prayed with him.

I asked if anyone in the class had ever done something like this or had the opportunity and didn’t do it. I shared my experience with the group. I was in line at the grocery store and the man ahead of me had only a bunch of bananas. When the cashier rang up his purchase, he gave her a WIC card. She told him there wasn’t enough on the card to cover the cost of the bananas so he left them there and walked out the door. I have thought many times since then that I should have bought the bananas. It would have cost me so little but it may have helped them stave off the hunger of their children. I regret it to this day.

Our mantra to remind ourselves has now become: Buy the Bananas! We need to be the one who shows up, the one who shows love to strangers, the one who loves like Jesus. Buy the Bananas! -Lynn

Today is our last day of training for our first group of mentors! We have been so blessed to work with this group and cannot wait to see the impact they will have on families in our community!
