Our sadness doesn't end with Rocky the cat.. we have had a VERY hard and somber weekend here at the rescue. Friday morning at about 7 am, before the weather even rolled in, we saw Mama Donkey down in the pen. After multiple failed attempts to get her up on her feet, we called the emergency equine vet, who immediately added us to his morning schedule. We didn't know what time he'd he here, but we knew he was coming. He did tell us with her age, this was probably an end of life situation. We were able to get her onto a tarp and drag her into the barn and out of the wind. In the time, while we waited for the vet, we stayed with her, trying to get her up and just petting her and giving her lots of love. Her two boys stood guard over us with looks of desperation and despair. Sadly, she passed away literally minutes before the vet got to us💔. Devastated doesn't begin to cover what we've been feeling. Mama Kimmy was up there, estimated around 30 years old, and she lived a good life in the almost 11 years we had her since being rescued from the Kaufman kill pen. She was the best girl. She was surrounded by love as she took her last breath. We told her we would take care of her boys and that she could rest easy now. The only comfort we have is that we were with her and that this didn't happen in the middle of the winter storm. We called our dirt guy immediately, and he was here in just a couple minutes with his equipment to bury her in our pear orchard. We rescued Mama Kimmy back in 2015 with her 3 month old son, Bob. We didn't know that she was also pregnant at the time until the following Easter she gave birth to Cadbury. They have lived here as part of our farm sanctuary project due to Mama having chronic feet issues that needed frequent trimming. She was severely foundered when we rescued her, which caused her lots of pain, but she always had such a gentle and calm demeanor. She was quite honestly the best girl. She will be missed greatly by us and her boys.
