Update 5/18: Please see video in comments or newest post! No one claimed him and after his legal stray hold was up we brought him home from the shelter. 😭We will keep him safe until his people are found, otherwise, he has found his home with us.💕
Update: Shockingly no one in our town has claimed this sweet boy. He may have traveled from miles away and needs a wider social media reach. He is currently on a stray hold with our county animal control (this is the law) in hopes he has a family looking for him. We will be a part of his story every step of the way. I sobbed loading him up, this has been difficult. As a sanctuary, every animal who comes into our care usually stays for life, but I feel this guy’s story is just beginning. My heart aches for him. Please keep sharing.🙏
I don’t think there are words that fully capture the feeling of any rescue. Trying to help an animal who doesn’t quite understand you’re there hoping to save his life or at least offer comfort… but he senses you’re good folks…(plus so many wonderful neighbors offering treats and hope).
Watching him run way out through fields, brush, across roads, heart racing every time he gets too far away… hoping he’ll finally stop, finally trust, even just for a moment.
But—patience wins.
Slowly, carefully, with time and gentleness, we were able to get him close enough to take treats from our hands. He was so so hungry.
Without panic and just a bit more time, the lead slipped right over his head and we brought him to safety just before sunset and a downpour.
Now he’s here at the sanctuary. His belly is full, he’s hydrated, and for the first time in who knows how long, he’s truly resting. Passed out with the other dogs like he’s always belonged in the pack.
But even in this peaceful moment, there’s a weight to it. Because as safe as he is now, there’s a chance someone out there is missing him. Someone could be searching, worrying, hoping he makes it home. Or maybe he was intentionally dumped.
More to uncover tomorrow - we all must rest.
We’ve knocked on doors, posted on all local sites and alerted the shelters who will get on this first thing.
We will get him scanned for a microchip tomorrow. He is neutered. No collar (he’s currently wearing one of ours), appears to be a young husky shepherd mix(?).
He’s an absolute sweetheart. Gentle, tired, and so deserving of love— rolls right over for belly rubs, though not a fan of most men or touching his paws. He can sit on command, and just blends right in like he lives here- but I know he’s confused.
Someone has to be looking for him.
He was found at the intersection of Cook and Searls Rd in Byron, NY.
For now, he sleeps. And we’re just grateful he’s safe.
Please share, comment, ask around!
Audrey is calling him Abel and her best friend who helped rescue him named him Bagel, so let’s get sweet Bagel Abel reunited with his family!🤞
