Mockingbird Farm Sanctuary is home to an always expanding motley crew of darling sentient beings - who will now forever know what unconditional love feels like. Th

e sanctuary property was originally built for dairy operation in the 1800’s and the transformation to sanctuary has been a powerful one. It has been a true labor of love giving the once condemned barns a compassionate purpose. Mockingbird provides forever homes to farmed animals who may have been neglected, abused, fated for slaughter or have medical needs that require dedicated care. The property is a peaceful, serene and curative one as you witness the animals simply live their lives on their own terms, explore the craftsmanship that went into building the massive barns, walk through the apple trees, pastures and experience the atmosphere of compassion. Mockingbird is a sanctuary to all living beings, human and non-human.

Happy 4 years at Mockingbird Sarah C. and Jill P.! ✨🎉

These two attended the same training weekend together 4 years ago, and have since become lead caregivers and good friends! We get to see their smiling faces every week!

Thank you Jill and Sarah!

Mockingbird’s Memorial Garden (originally built during United Way’s Day of Caring several years ago) was paid such tender and thoughtful care this morning! 🥹

Our garden and grounds volunteer crew organized by lead caregiver did an incredible job.
They have spent hours and hours weeding, planting, digging and organizing. They’ve donated gorgeous perennials, mulch, a bird bath and more…
Maintaining the memorial garden where our beloveds rest in eternity has become so important to the folks who have grown to love and care for them all of their days.

The same people who work their bodies hard doing caretaking chores, worked to overhaul the garden and it’s just stunning. The new plants will grow and establish and continue to overlook the pastures.
It’s another spot here at the sanctuary meant for reflection, compassion, unconditional love and peace.

I could not be more proud of the people who make us, us. 💛

Two puzzle pieces.💕
Aspen, our 5 year old hen during a spring health exam with Farm Manager Amy.

Amy adores the whole herd, but really loves Aspen (and Finch)!

She is the glue holding us together! As the volunteer coordinator and trainer, she’s the first person you’d connect with on your volunteer journey with us!
Amy also helps to manage chores, inventory, projects, events and medical care. Her incredible attention to detail and integrity in all things makes her vital in all daily operations.

Please help us show her the love and gratitude she deserves!

Finch: Um, ma’am… something happened to my friends.

Radley and Daisy got their spring haircuts today! It was Radley’s first ever shear, and he looks like a brand new baby lamb, he is so incredibly tiny under all of that fleece!
Our other sheep Ruby is a Katahdin, and technically grows hair rather than wool- so she sheds her winter coat like any other mammal.

We only elect for a barrel cut on Daisy as she’s an older senior girl and gets chilled easily. As you might know, she spent a harrowing week at Cornell last month and goes back next month for major jaw surgery.
She has quite a few health complications, but she’s ready to face the summer with all of her might- with all of those teeth forward! ☀️

Thanks to .shearing.pros for visiting us each year!

Update 5/18: Please see video in comments or newest post! No one claimed him and after his legal stray hold was up we brought him home from the shelter. 😭We will keep him safe until his people are found, otherwise, he has found his home with us.💕

Update: Shockingly no one in our town has claimed this sweet boy. He may have traveled from miles away and needs a wider social media reach. He is currently on a stray hold with our county animal control (this is the law) in hopes he has a family looking for him. We will be a part of his story every step of the way. I sobbed loading him up, this has been difficult. As a sanctuary, every animal who comes into our care usually stays for life, but I feel this guy’s story is just beginning. My heart aches for him. Please keep sharing.🙏

I don’t think there are words that fully capture the feeling of any rescue. Trying to help an animal who doesn’t quite understand you’re there hoping to save his life or at least offer comfort… but he senses you’re good folks…(plus so many wonderful neighbors offering treats and hope).

Watching him run way out through fields, brush, across roads, heart racing every time he gets too far away… hoping he’ll finally stop, finally trust, even just for a moment.
But—patience wins.
Slowly, carefully, with time and gentleness, we were able to get him close enough to take treats from our hands. He was so so hungry.
Without panic and just a bit more time, the lead slipped right over his head and we brought him to safety just before sunset and a downpour.

Now he’s here at the sanctuary. His belly is full, he’s hydrated, and for the first time in who knows how long, he’s truly resting. Passed out with the other dogs like he’s always belonged in the pack.

But even in this peaceful moment, there’s a weight to it. Because as safe as he is now, there’s a chance someone out there is missing him. Someone could be searching, worrying, hoping he makes it home. Or maybe he was intentionally dumped.
More to uncover tomorrow - we all must rest.
We’ve knocked on doors, posted on all local sites and alerted the shelters who will get on this first thing.

We will get him scanned for a microchip tomorrow. He is neutered. No collar (he’s currently wearing one of ours), appears to be a young husky shepherd mix(?).

He’s an absolute sweetheart. Gentle, tired, and so deserving of love— rolls right over for belly rubs, though not a fan of most men or touching his paws. He can sit on command, and just blends right in like he lives here- but I know he’s confused.
Someone has to be looking for him.
He was found at the intersection of Cook and Searls Rd in Byron, NY.

For now, he sleeps. And we’re just grateful he’s safe.
Please share, comment, ask around!
Audrey is calling him Abel and her best friend who helped rescue him named him Bagel, so let’s get sweet Bagel Abel reunited with his family!🤞

If you’ve been following us from the very beginning, you know little Audrey!
Within one month of purchasing this 1800’s farm (nearly 11 years ago) in hopes to rehabilitate and transform a crumbling barn into a sanctuary, we found out we’d also be welcoming our little partner in compassion.

It’s hard to believe she just turned 10 years old on Thursday! Time sure flies. She grew up in a carrier on my back, attending rescues, renovating the farm, feeding and caring for the herd, mixing bottles and she makes sure everyone feels safe here - forever.

Her first steps were taken right next to 3 day old goats Forrest and Ferris in the farmhouse! She has had ducklings, a gosling, chicks, turkey poults, guinea fowl, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs and a cockatoo all take turns snuggling beside her (sometimes right in her bed😅) when they needed Audrey’s tender heart. She has been involved in every aspect of sanctuary life in and out of the barn.

She has a gentle way about her that the animals have always recognized immediately. She is the reason we rescued baby 3 legged Radley sheep and she prioritized his physical therapy (he still lamb hops with her and jumps into the stars when he sees her).

Her laughter heals, compassion cures and spirit has brought so much joy to everyone here at Mockingbird.

She has never known anything but life here at the sanctuary, and for her birthday she was wondering if we could raise funds for her friends.

What do you say?
$10 for her 10th birthday?
Let’s surprise her!🥰

Thank you so much.
Happiest birthday Audrey!💕
