Godwin Heights sixth-grader Jeremiah Johnson added a special ingredient.

“I know people are going to like this because I made the food for the people, and it is the best food because I made it with love,” he said. “So when they bite into it they are going to feel the love, and when they taste it they are going to know that I made it.”

West Godwin Team 21: What do seeds, sunshine, and time have in common? These are things we put Into the garden! And what do vegetables, fruits, and enjoyment have in common? Students learned these are "outputs"- some of the many things that gardens give us back! Students created a garden "input" by assembling seed packets, and they tasted a garden "output"- delicious cucumbers on sandwiches.

At North Godwin Team 21, students were challenged to think about the money aspects of gardening- what supplies cost, cheaper ways to get supplies, and potential savings and income that gardens can generate. They enjoyed making their own cucumber sandwiches and creating seed packets for sharing.

H.O.P.E. Gardens-Helping Other People Eat

Partnering with schools, parents, and community leaders, we believe we can help local food systems empower individuals to learn new ways of seeing and engaging with the world. We believe change can start with a bit of knowledge and a small seed in the hands of a child.

As a nonprofit, Hope Garden’s goals are to promote sustainable organic practices, and self-sufficient gardening to a diverse population, at a scale that does not make it dependent on a narrowly defined market. Hope Gardens teaches sustainable, no-till organic gardening practices that are used to supply healthy, affordable sources of food to those who are challenged with financial limitations, growing conditions and time commitments. Hope Gardens also teaches the same gardening techniques and principles to various community members and organizations who may not have limitations, but desire to learn and apply the same method of sustainable food growth.
