The discussion of a dog park in Uptown Butte needs to be revisited. While not personally a dog owner, the challenges of dog ownership are clear, and there are no available spaces to let your dog run free or play outside because of relevant leash laws and Uptown’s urban community. I recommend the former Cinders Ball Park as a potential location for a dog park for Uptown Butte.
Located between W Silver and W Galena; the hospital, Montana Tech and dense residential areas, the site is ideal for a leash free park. Lacking the facilities for use as a ball park, and with Scown Field just blocks North, this addition to Uptown will only benefit our community. Because of remaining facilities, only basic fencing around the outfield would be required; and restrooms are directly across the street at City parks around the hospital. Future goals for the dog park should include a ¼ mile track with workout stations around the inside perimeter, but for now, simple fencing would do the trick.
Many like-cities have outsourced the management and fund raising for the park to a non-profit organization, leaving the City with little cost or liability to shoulder, but stand-up and maintenance are minimal. Most dog park efforts are supported wholly from volunteer and donated funds, or bi-annual fundraising events.
As a neighbor of the park, I think this would be a good upgrade to an otherwise neglected site, and provide a much needed service to our Citizens. Regardless of specific location or approach, Butte needs dog parks, better bicycle lanes and more pedestrian friendly infrastructure to meet the needs of Uptown citizens and Montana Tech’s student body. This proposed location and the development of a dog park Uptown are simple steps to capitalizing on Butte’s beautiful urban Uptown and to best serve is Citizens.

As a follow up to the opinion article, “Revisit Butte dog park idea,” published in the Montana Standard, March 22 of 2013 – The idea of a dog park in Uptown Butte has gained momentum. Since early 2012, many concerned citizens have organized around the idea of a dog park, or leash free area in Uptown Butte. Many people have invested time and effort to ensure that Uptown Butte gets just such a park. Following the editorial, many more began showing their support; offering thoughts and ideas for the park. In addition to businesses and citizens, Butte’s Spay and Neuter Task Force and CEO, Matt Vincent helped progress the project and organize efforts.

In late-April Mr. Vincent met with us and discussed the concept of a dog park at Cinder’s Field, located between Silver and Galena Street in Uptown Butte. An original supporter of the idea, Mr. Vincent shared potential plans for Cinders Field and suggested we recon a larger location at the corner of Platinum and Excelsior Streets.

The location at Platinum and Excelsior is perfect. Larger and better able to facilitate the full scope of a dog park and the many development plans; the location is ideal. Basing our approach on proven models, this site can grow to have a quarter-mile track with sponsored workout stations, picnic and adequate amenities with available parking and space for all persons and dogs visiting the site.

Where we now; and what is next? Mr. Vincent let us know that in early-August a new Parks and Recreation Director will be hired and tasked with pursuing this project and many others to better our beautiful City. In preparation, we have fully surveyed the site and laid out potential plans for best utilizing the space’s potential (thanks to volunteered time by MT Tech engineer students). The cost to the City is notional, and early pledges from individuals and local businesses like The Dublin and Fresh RX Skincare are very promising. The project is progressing and Uptown Butte will likely have its dog park soon. Friends of Butte will be standing up a page and other mediums for folks to follow and support the project. Until then, please reach out and let us know what ideas you have to make this a successful project from the get go.

As a side note, the recycle bins placed in front of key business in the Uptown area are a wonderful addition and a step in the right direction for Butte. A dog park, better bicycle lanes and improvements to our infrastructure promote Butte’s claim to the All America City. I love to complain, but it’s tough with positive change across our great City.

Many Thanks,
