There are 23 abandoned kilns hidden in the mountains of Beaverhead County. You've probably never heard of them.

The Canyon Creek Charcoal Kilns were built in the mid-1880s to fuel the silver smelter in nearby Glendale, once one of Montana's most important silver and lead mining areas. Charcoal burners would fill each kiln with stacked pine logs, seal the door with mortar, and wait nearly two weeks per burn.

Glendale is a ghost town now. The kilns are still standing. Both are open to the public in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, about 15 minutes off I-15. Have you been?
