Rotary District 5390 Governor Lucy Smith welcomed Rotarians and the RI President’s rep Dr. Richard “Rotary Big Rich“ Churchman, who joined us from Lake Charles, LA, in Great Falls this weekend. It was a time of celebration and fellowship with a scavenger hunt downtown to find beautiful murals, line dancing and a silent auction to benefit RYLA. Topics for discussion included Rotary youth exchange, Interact and Rotaract clubs, fundraising, membership and the District’s Epic Day of Service projects.
Many District 5390 Rotarians pledged $100 per year to become a Polio Plus Fellow in support of RI’s commitment to eradicate polio in the world. Each new Polio Plus Fellow was gifted with a Polio Plus pin and a wooden bird handmade by PDG Rick Powers and his wife Nikki.

The conference ended with District Governor Lucy passing the leadership baton to District Governor Elect Kathy Schulte and District Governor Nominee, Jeff Langlinais who will assume their new offices on July 1.

Governor Lucy expressed her thanks to everyone in attendance, including six people from Butte. Everyone extended thanks to Lucy for her efforts on behalf of District 5390 and RI during her outstanding year as Governor.

We invite you to attend an RCB meeting for more information about Rotary Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of Butte “enjoyed” Saturday’s wet weather by participating in two worthwhile community events. Fortunately, Butte’s weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those attending either event or those working to better Butte.

Rotarians Cora Anne Langel-Person, Reisa Di**le, and Jim Murphy joined Silver Bow Kiwanis at the 27th Bicycle Rodeo. The work of Kiwanis and the Bike lab to provide bikes, helmets, and safety instruction to the community was inspiring. The kids attending appeared to not even notice the weather, their attention laser focused on helmets, bikes, and riding skills. Rotary was honored to participate and looks forward to more opportunities to work together.

A second Rotary trio braved a gathering on the hill to participate in Wild Montana’s Trails 101 program at Foreman Park. Butte Rotary operates the Maud S Canyon trail system, through the East Ridge Foundation, maintaining an excellent system of trails just off of the Continental Drive exit. Rotarians Karan Kunz, Caleb Clements and Bob Miller shared information on Maud S and collaborated with others supporting Butte’s extensive trail systems.

You can find out more about Rotary, the East Ridge Foundation and Maud S, or the good work of Silver Bow Kiwanis and the Bike Lab by visiting our pages or dropping us a message. All of us would love to share our good works and welcome your support!

Members of the Butte High Speech and Debate Club attended Butte Rotary’s weekly meeting, sharing a short humorous interpretation piece and discussing the upcoming national tournament. At least five members have qualified for June’s national competition in Richmond VA. Qualifying to compete in the national competition is a BIG deal and Butte is understandably proud of these teens.

Alaina Moore, Santana Kreig and Megan Donnelly shared information on the subject area each will be competing in, the long road it has taken to qualify, and the road ahead. Currently the team is engaged in a fundraising effort to ensure they can compete at their best and enjoy their trip.

If you would like to support Butte’s best and brightest, a tax-deductible donation supporting the team’s trip can be sent to: Roger McCullough, Butte High School, 401 S. Wyoming, Butte MT 59701. Checks can be made out to “Butte High Speech and Debate (account 145)”.

Hibernians (those from or connected to Ireland, derived from Hibernia, the classical Latin name for Ireland) Joe Lee and Con Sullivan shared the history of Butte's Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH Butte, MT) with the Butte Rotary Club. Joe Lee did a terrific job describing the history of the group. The AOH was formed in New York in 1839 to protect the interests of Irish Catholics facing religious persecution. Butte's AOH history goes back as far as Butte City, forming in the late 1860’s, boasting over 1,000 active members in its prime. Today’s AOH goals … “are to foster Irish history and culture, promote Catholic values, and support the reunification and independence of Ireland”.

Fellow Hibernian Con Sullivan discussed many of the current projects the AOH are involved in. Perhaps the most significant being the restoration and care of St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Butte’s first Catholic Cemetery, established in 1885 containing an estimated 13,000 to 15,000 graves, suffered many years of neglect before AOH’s rescue.

The group is also active with restoration projects at the World Museum of Mining and other sites. A few months ago, they were appropriately recognized as one of Butte’s Heroes. The group does remarkable work in Butte, coupling their skills with an unmatched dedication to Butte. Learn more by following their adventures at AOH Butte, MT

If you would like to share your story, or that of your group with us, drop us a message and we’ll be happy to visit.

The Rotary Club of Butte would like to thank all of those who braved Saturday’s snow squalls to network and help with a few projects at the World Museum of Mining. Kiwanis Club of Butte, Silver Bow Kiwanis, Action Inc., Butte Rescue Mission, Interact Club of Butte Montana and the Butte Exchange Club teamed up to paint and swap contact information.

A dedicated troop of 30 of Butte’s best volunteers were joined by a number of community members, all focused on a better Butte. Donations to the Kiwanis Club of Butte Sunshine Camp and the Butte Rescue Mission were collected and will help address a few of the many needs in our community. Despite the weather-related challenges, the opportunity to interact with groups doing good things was rewarding and we look forward to future collaborations.

Thank you to all who donated, grabbed a paint brush or staffed a table. Lastly, thank you to the World Museum of Mining for hosting. The museum is one of Montana’s best collections of historical artifacts, inspiring stories, and a tribute to those that helped build the world we live in.

Despite Mother Nature's uncooperativeness, Rotary, Kiwanis, the Mining Museum, and others are still collecting donations to the causes below.

Donating your time, or one of the food or hygiene items on the list, will get you a free museum pass that you could use on a sunny day.

We still have painting chores that we've moved indoors and what appreciate any help.

Unfortunately, the needs of our neighbors don't go away when the snow flies! Help us fill the truck that was generously donated by Butte U Haul to help those in need.

Lastly, due to weather issues, we will not have food trucks on site.
