๐Ÿ’œ October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This month, we stand with survivors, remember those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence, and continue working toward a community where everyone can feel safe in their own home.

Domestic violence does not always leave visible bruises. It can include emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation, financial control, stalking, and many other forms of power and control. No one should have to face it alone.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. Reaching out can be the first step toward safety, support, and hope.

Throughout October, we encourage our community to wear purple, start conversations, educate themselves about the signs of abuse, support survivors, and remind others that help is available.

๐Ÿ’œ Believe survivors.
๐Ÿ’œ Support survivors.
๐Ÿ’œ Speak up against domestic violence.
๐Ÿ’œ Help us break the silence.

Together, we can make a difference.

A Message to Our Community
We want to share an important update regarding the current status of Safe Space.
Safe Space board made the difficult decision in April to place our shelter in hibernation status, meaning our doors are temporarily closed due to the lack of funding necessary to safely and effectively operate our programs and services.
Over the past 10 months, we have faced a number of challenges and financial obstacles that have limited our ability to operate at full capacity. This was not an easy decision, and we recognize how deeply our community depends on services for individuals and families impacted by domestic and sexual violence.
Please know that hibernation does not mean the end of our mission.
We remain fully committed to the survivors and families in our community. Behind the scenes, we are continuing to work tirelessly to strengthen our organization, secure sustainable funding, rebuild resources, and create a path toward reopening our doors.
As we work toward that goal, we are also looking for members of our community who would like to become involved and help us move forward. We are currently seeking additional board members, are always welcoming volunteers, and are exploring new fundraising opportunities that can help provide the financial support needed to reopen and sustain our services.
Whether through serving on our board, volunteering your time, helping with fundraising efforts, sharing ideas, or supporting our mission in other ways, community involvement can make a meaningful difference in helping us rebuild.
If you are interested in helping us in any way, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We would be grateful to hear from individuals, businesses, organizations, and community members who want to support our mission and help us move forward.
Our goal has always been, and continues to be, to provide a safe place for some of the most vulnerable members of our community when they need it most.
We are incredibly grateful for the continued support, compassion, and understanding of our community during this difficult chapter. We believe strongly in the importance of these services, and we are doing everything we can to ensure they can once again be available to those who need them.
This is a pause โ€” not an end. Together, with the support of our community, we hope to strengthen our organization and reopen our doors to those who need us most.

๐Ÿ“ฃ LAST DAY! ๐Ÿ“ฃ

On view through today, April 22, in the Jailhouse Gallery Helena at The Myrna Loy, "what were you wearing?" is an exhibit highlighting the diverse experiences of survivors and a clarion call to end victim-blaming for sexual violence.

The exhibit features 15 outfits recreated from stories shared by real sexual assault survivors. A Marine Corps uniform, a hospital gown, and spiderman pajamas are just a few examples of what survivors from our own community were wearing when they were sexually assaulted. Some were assaulted by adults they trusted, some repeatedly by their spouses, some by acquaintances. None of them invited an attack with the clothes they were wearing. Clothing doesnโ€™t cause an attack; only perpetrators do.

Each of the 15 outfits in this exhibit represents about 3,000 survivors in our tri-county area, where we can expect 31,700-45,000 of our 95,000+ residents to have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime.

We believe that boldly showing what survivors were wearing can open minds and shift attitudes about what sexual assault looks like.

Visit the thefriendshipcenter.org/wwyw to learn more and preview the outfits and stories.
