🍦 A SWEET THANK YOU TO FLOSSY MAE’S! 🍦

Students attending our “Walk in Their Boots” Education Day received a special treat before boarding their buses for the trip back to school—ice cream from Flossy Mae’s!

We are so grateful to the generous donors who made this sweet surprise possible and to Flossy Mae’s for joining us for such a special day. It was wonderful to welcome a new Butler business to the museum and introduce them to so many young visitors!

After a morning spent stepping into the lives of those who served during World War II, ice cream was the perfect way to end the day. Thank you for helping us create another happy memory for these students! ❤️🍦

🇺🇸 WALK IN THEIR BOOTS: A DAY OF HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE! 🇺🇸

What an incredible day at the Museum of Butler!

Today, we welcomed approximately 140 young history explorers — including 130 public school students from Doe, Laurel, and Hampton Elementary Schools, along with about 10 homeschool students — for our special Walk in Their Boots: World War II Education Day!

Our goal was simple: to take history beyond the pages of a textbook and give these young people an opportunity to experience, explore, and better understand the lives of those who served and sacrificed during World War II.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our participating teachers, parents, chaperones, living history interpreters, reenactors, and wonderful volunteers who helped make this educational experience possible. Your enthusiasm and dedication help keep history alive for the next generation!

🌧️ A WEATHER-RELATED UPDATE

Unfortunately, the approaching tropical storm has forced us to make some changes to our weekend plans. For the safety of our guests, volunteers, and the irreplaceable historical artifacts and displays entrusted to our care, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our Life on the Home Front program, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 10.

But this is a postponement, NOT a cancellation! We look forward to announcing a new date soon so everyone will have an opportunity to enjoy this special living history experience.

❤️ History is more than dates and names. It’s the stories of real people, real sacrifices, and the generations whose lives were forever changed.

🚨 IMPORTANT MUSEUM CLOSURE NOTICE 🌧️

The Museum of Butler will be CLOSED Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, 2026.

With the approaching tropical storm expected to bring heavy rain, potentially damaging winds, and hazardous conditions to our area, we have made the decision to close the museum this weekend.

The safety of our volunteers, guests, and community will always come first. While we regret having to close our doors, we believe taking precautions ahead of the storm is the responsible thing to do.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support of the Museum of Butler.

Please stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and take care of one another as the storm moves through our beautiful Watauga Valley. ❤️

🚨 **IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT — SATURDAY'S EVENT POSTPONED!** 🚨

Mother Nature has other plans for us this weekend!

After careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to **POSTPONE our "Life on the Home Front" 1940s Living History event scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at the Museum of Butler.**

With the approaching storm and the potential for heavy rain and high winds, we simply aren't willing to take chances with the safety of our guests, volunteers, and exhibitors — or the irreplaceable historical artifacts, memorabilia, and displays that make this event so special.

Our incredible living history interpreters have worked hard to bring the 1940s to life, and we want everyone to enjoy the full experience — not spend the day battling the weather!

**THE GOOD NEWS? WE'RE POSTPONING, NOT CANCELING!**

We're already working on a new date and will make that announcement very soon!

🎖️ **AND FRIDAY'S EDUCATION DAY WILL "SOLDIER ON" AS PLANNED!**

🥾 WALK IN THEIR BOOTS: A WEEKEND OF WORLD WAR II LIVING HISTORY

History comes alive at the Museum of Butler this Friday and Saturday as we explore the service, sacrifice and determination that shaped American life during World War II—and the remarkable story of what was happening here in Butler at the same time.

📚 EDUCATION DAY — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9

Our morning session is now full, but we can still accept homeschool students and families in the afternoon session from 1:00–3:00 p.m.

Designed for students in grades 5–12, the afternoon will include living-history stations, period clothing and equipment, artifacts, demonstrations, first-person interpretation and a guided tour of the Museum.

Admission is free for participating students, educators and chaperones, but advance registration is required.

🇺🇸 LIFE ON THE HOME FRONT — SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10

The public is invited to join us from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. for the final Living History Saturday of our 2026 season.

Step into the 1940s and discover how Americans supported the war effort through Victory Gardens, scrap drives, war bonds, civilian defense, the Aircraft Warning Service, women’s factory work, military service and more.

You’ll also discover the powerful connection between World War II and the “Town That Wouldn’t Drown.” While local men and women were serving their country, Watauga Dam was under construction and the people of Old Butler were preparing to lose their homes, farms, businesses—and eventually their entire town.
