I found Indigo, FITZ's 12 year old black jaguar dead in her den at her Saturday PM feeding. She was recumbent with her paws tucked as Jags do when asleep. No sign of struggle nor injury. I did find find remnants of a coral snake. No head. My best diagnosis is envenomation. Indy was to be relocated to another zoo prior to FITZ's closure. We were sad to see her leave, and are now sadder to see her passing. For the first time in My and our zoo's Three Decade history, we are not promoting Black Jaguar Reproduction and Husbandry. Indy was feisty, untrustworthy, and beautiful. She will be missed.

Exciting Changes Ahead for the Florida International Teaching Zoo!

As many of you know, our lease on the current property will expire on November 30, 2026. With that in mind, we’re preparing for a new chapter and actively looking to purchase our own permanent property to continue and expand our mission.

We’re searching for 0.5 to 1 acre in Marion, Sumter, or Citrus Counties, improved with a mobile home (fixer-upper OK!), and zoned A1A or RUR. This will give us a stable home to keep serving the community for years to come.

We’re so grateful for the incredible support you’ve shown us through the years. Your encouragement fuels our passion for wildlife education, animal care, and community service.

If you know of any suitable properties for sale—or want to be a part of this next phase of our journey—please get in touch. Let’s create the future of the Florida International Teaching Zoo together!
