December 5, 2024
To Our Supporters and Community,
It is with deep gratitude and a sense of fulfillment that we announce the dissolution of our 501c3 non-profit organization Society of War Dancers, effective December 6, 2024. This decision was made with thoughtful consideration by our Board of Directors, as we believe we have successfully completed our mission of serving the Northern Cheyenne communities during times of great need.
The Society of War Dancers was born out of necessity in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by our local traditional ways and guided by the wisdom of our elders and spiritual leaders, we came together to provide relief to our community in its most vulnerable moments. From delivering essential supplies to supporting families through the uncertainties of the pandemic, our work has been a reflection of resilience and unity.
As the years unfolded, our mission expanded to meet the needs of our community during other crises. When forest fires caused power outages, water shortages, and fuel scarcity, we were there, ready to assist. Despite limited resources, under the leadership of our founding chair Dr. Leo K. Killsback, we rose to the occasion to provide aid and comfort whenever it was needed.
Our efforts also extended beyond emergency relief, honoring and preserving the traditions that are the heartbeat of our community. We took pride in supporting our efforts to preserve and teach the Cheyenne language, traditional plant and ecological knowledge, and assisting with ceremonies, local powwow celebrations and cultural events.
Now, as we reflect on these past four years, we are proud of what we have achieved together. While our journey as an organization comes to a close, the spirit of generosity and resilience that defined the Society of War Dancers will continue to thrive in the hearts of all who were part of this journey.
We will no longer be accepting financial or other forms of support. We will also cease participating in fundraising efforts and sponsoring or co-sponsoring events. We encourage you to carry forward the values and spirit of service that we sought to embody in your own lives and communities.
It has been an incredible honor to serve alongside so many dedicated individuals. We thank everyone who contributed to our mission—our community members, supporters, and leaders. Your unwavering support made every achievement possible.
As we step into the next chapter, we wish you all the best. May your holidays be filled with peace, joy, and the enduring spirit of togetherness.
With gratitude,
The Board of Directors
