Just wanted to give an update on the Battle of the Blowout. While Saturday will feature speakers and some reenactor activities, a memorial is being planned for Sunday. While Sgt. Doughtery will of course be the main focus, a narration of the battle and honor guards for Sgt. Doughtery, the other men of Co. A 23rd Infantry, and the six Lakota involved is being planned. We have members of Friends connected or directly involved with many organizations that would be welcome and encouraged to attend (i.e. Dale Beethe and Army of the Frontier, Jerry Davenport and Knights of Columbus, and so on). The American Legion, VFW, Boy Scouts, etc. would all be welcome participants. Please consider this a direct invitation to you and your organizations (and anyone else you can think of) to take part in the memorial for the fallen on Sunday, May 17th at 11:00 am at Fort Hartsuff. You may contact/reply to me directly or get in touch with Michaela Clemens at the park to show your support/interest.

Thank you!

Interested and current Friends members,

Full membership in very large part allows you to voice your vote on issues involving events, projects, and use of funds to support Fort Hartsuff. If you're not already a member, please consider joining.

With the current state of affairs in Nebraska, some locations like Fort Hartsuff are left with an uncertain future. Support and "visibility" of Fort Hartsuff is needed more than ever, and your membership can go far in providing that support and visibility. The fundraising, grant application, and volunteer work that Friends can provide is in great demand. If there was ever a chance to step up and make a difference for a place we all cherish and love, this is it!!! We can no longer afford to consider having a "rainy day fund" to just sit on and wait to use... we need to do what we can to raise and spend money to keep the fort visible to the state and at least try to guarantee it a future. And while I'm not trying to scare everyone with a "doomsday" scenario that may or may not exist, I think we can all agree what a horrible feeling it would be to just "blink" someday and suddenly it's too late.

If at all possible, please submit by end of first quarter, March 31st, 2026.

Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Per the bylaws, we will try to have quarterly meetings every year (the official "annual" meeting 2nd weekend of September). The next meeting will likely be sometime in April, announcements will be made via email, text, and Facebook posts to hopefully keep everyone informed.

Thank you for reading and consideration. And as always, THANK YOU for your continued interest and support of Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park!
