TW: Last slide involves shooting.
Today marks the anniversary of “Victory in Europe Day”, the declared end of N**i occupation in 1945, when the German Third Reich surrendered. The death toll and conditions of survivors brought shock to the world, as the level of atrocity had mainly remained hidden. Exact numbers of victims are still unknown. In Lucy Dawidowicz’s “The War Against the Jews” (1975), she used prewar birth and death records to come up with the figure of 5,933,900 Jews that were killed, however this may not be an accurate number. WII scholars have estimated between 5 and 6.2 million Jews died in the Holocaust.
For Roma, the numbers are more varied and grossly underestimated officially. The official range is 250,000-500,000 but it has been estimated it to be as high as 1,500,000-2,000,000. Many scholars agree that 1,500,000 Roma/Sinti victims would seemingly be more accurate. We do know that it was roughly 75% of Europe’s Roma/Sinti population. There are no exact numbers for any of the other victims of the Holocaust either.
A big reason for this is because of camp prisoners that were referred to as “remainder to be liquidated”, “hangers-on” and “partisans”.
Mass roadside and village murders known as Einsatzgruppen by N**i mobile units are also a huge factor. Entire communities and family groups would be wiped out and and buried in large pits. Often these were dug by the communities that were going to be shot.
“Displaced Persons” camps housed displaced and sick victims until they could return home, achieve refugee status or immigrate elsewhere. Those who were not accepted back to their own country or to a new one remained in the camps until they were closed between 1947-1959. Rejected groups of people in these camps quite often were Roma, as no country cared to take them.
During the war, Roma/Sinti and Jews had shared bonds such as music, learning each other’s languages and customs to be taught to surviving younger generations.
In my vitsa, it is said to only visit Jewish doctors, as that shared history makes them the only ones trustable. ✨
