For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't know there's anything wrong with it.

Congress could use COVID-19 to strip students with disabilities of access to education by allowing schools waivers to opt-out of providing free appropriate public education.

Don't forget, there's a Board of Education meeting tonight!

You can watch some of the meeting broadcast online with a short delay (access available through the BHBL website), but have you ever wondered what happens when the camera goes off?? Come and see!

We've had far too many questions about bullying lately from BHBL parents, so we think this is important to share with everyone! Please re-post! You never know what child's life you might change with this information or what parent needs to hear this right now!

If your child is being bullied in BHBL, fill out this form and submit it to your child's principal who has been designated to receive these complaints in BHBL under the anti-bullying law! If you're worried about retaliation yourself for making a report, contact us! We're happy to help!https://www.bhbl.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/DASA_Reporting_Form.pdf

This form initiates an investigation and starts creating your paper trail!

Next: Take Action!
1. Ask where BHBL's "Bullying Prevention Policy" is! We can't seem to find any policy, only one webpage with minimal information!
2. Ask who is on BHBL's "district wide and building-level bullying prevention committees", and where/when they meet!
3. Ask if there are parent representatives on the district wide and building-level bullying prevention committees that are supposed to exist!
4. Ask where BHBL is hiding its policies and procedures on Dignity for All Students Act (DASA-anti-bullying law) investigations!

Parents, did you know that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ("IDEA" for short- an educational benefit law) states schools must take steps to give kiddos with IEPs an “equal opportunity to participate” in extracurricular activities. This means schools must give students with IEPs the help they need to take part. That includes both SUPPORTS and SERVICES. The activities, along with the services and supports, MUST be in the child’s IEP.

If your kiddo's doing after school activities or will next year, make sure you're ensuring this is in your IEPs!

Why is this little boy cowering behind his mother crying while she reads the BEAUTIFUL speech he wrote using assistive technology about his experience with dyslexia?

Because his public school failed in teaching him how to read! He wakes up every morning at 6am to do an hour of structured literacy with his mother so that he can learn how to read.

School Districts that fail to screen for dyslexia early and provide early remediation steal so much from these children! They allow dyslexia to UNDERMINE CONFIDENCE and HIDE INTELLIGENCE!

As adults, we must do better for these innocent children who don’t know their literacy potential!
