We apologize for the delay regarding an update on the school. We first want to thank all those who showed up to the commissioners meeting in support of us. We do not have enough information to fully discuss everything, but we do know that our school board and commissioners are working tirelessly together to help our cause and we want to thank them for their hard work. We will hopefully get to know more around March or April

Good Evening Everyone.....
We know it has been a while since we have had any news about Clearmont School, at least since the School Board listed it for sale. We may now have some good news. We have been contacted by one of the County Commissioners alerting us that Kathy Amos, Superintendent of Yancey County Schools is going to speak at the next Commissioner's meeting with some very interesting information regarding Clearmont School. We are strongly advised to attend this meeting if we are interested in preserving and utilizing Clearmont for the Community. So please all that can and will come out the 13th ( this coming Monday evening) at 6pm in the courthouse. If we aren’t seen then we can’t be heard. It’s time for Clearmont to be heard, so please come one and all to the courthouse this coming 13th at 6pm. Thank you all and remember, We are Clearmont!

The School Board has accepted his bid of $400,000.00 pending any upset bids within the next 10 days. If there are no bids, the school will be sold.

I will speak on behalf of our community center team; we are sorry that we couldn’t accomplish this goal for our community, what a beautiful dream we had in trying to bring our community together for the county. The impact Clearmont had on our families will not be soon forgotten.

The Yancey County Board of Education, at a special meeting on Sept. 8, discussed an offer on the former Clearmont Elementary School building along with the 11.4 acres that make up the grounds. Clearmont, along with the Bee Log and Bald Creek school properties were listed for sale by the board when the new, consolidated Blue Ridge Elementary opened. They did so even after much interest was shown within the communities about saving these schools and using them as community based outlets for learning, teaching and sustaining its neighbors. We in the Clearmont community went one step further in the effort to save Clearmont School. We formed a non-profit Corporation, elected a board of directors, held numerous community meetings, fundraisers, and attended many County Commission and School Board meetings pleading with them to help us keep the school for a community resource. They ignored our request to re-purpose the school and keep it as a vital part of the community and instead voted to put the schools up for sale. They listed the school for $556,000.00, an outrageous sum and much more money than our non-profit could raise. The school board has now received an offer of $320,000.00 for the Clearmont School property. They made a counter offer of $450,000.00. If the prospective buyer counters with an offer and the board accepts that offer, it will be advertised subject to an upset bid. It seems that it was all about the money the whole time. No thought given to helping the community, especially at a time when communities all over the country are suffering. Right here in Yancey County we could use more community support. During this recent outbreak of COVID-19 we could use more community involvement. A lot of us drive by Clearmont everyday and think “ a waste” that this beautiful school building just sits there empty of children, teachers, and neighbors willing to help neighbors. We here on the committee will be heartbroken when Clearmont school is sold, all of you who went there and live in the community and Yancey County should be heartbroken also.

WE DON’T WANT CLEARMONT SCHOOL DEMOLISHED

Imagine a place for senior programs, youth and after school activities, community meals, music festivals, ball games and countless other activities that would benefit our neighbors. These things cannot be possible without your help.

Clearmont School is in danger. For months, a small group of concerned citizens have been trying to convince the Yancey County School Board to donate Clearmont School and property to the community for use as a community center. Even though we had supporters and petitions, the board ultimately voted to list the school for sale with a local realtor. Your School Board is currently working toward selling our beloved school to the highest bidder.

We MUST NOT allow this to happen! We are actively seeking donations to purchase Clearmont School. Your financial support is crucial to our efforts in purchasing the school for community use. Now is the time for you to step up and make a real difference. Help us achieve our mission of creating a vibrant community center, full of activities for people of all ages.

We will make something wonderful here, but we need YOUR help. If you are concerned and willing, please help rescue Clearmont School. Make a tax deductible donation and help us reach our goal to purchase the school for our community.

Thank you in advance for your contribution. Your donation will go toward the purchase and operation of Clearmont Community Center, Inc.

Here are the ways you can donate:

A Note from Lisa Shepard, VP of Community Organization:

I just want to tell everyone who participated in the pancake breakfast on Saturday how much you are appreciated. We want to thank all those who cooked, cleaned, set up, ate, donated food and money and/or otherwise helped with the breakfast. It was a great success and hopefully will continue as an annual event.

Also, I want to let everyone know we are meeting tonight (Thursday Nov. 14) at 6:00 at the Yancey County Library. We will update on the breakfast and discuss our next steps in this process of seeking the school building. Please come out, share your ideas and help support our beloved Clearmont! Do you or someone you know write grants? Have funding ideas? Come out and share your expertise! You can also message us here at [email protected].

If you weren't at the pancake breakfast and want to purchase a T-shirt, we will have those for sale as well. The cost is $15.00 per shirt.

Thank you--hope to see you tonight!
