A Cautionary Corn Cob Tale for Memorial Weekend

Yesterday morning Kirby and Dyson startled a squirrel šŸæļø who dropped a corn cob 🌽 onto the patio. It broke into 2 pieces and my little vacuums promptly each swallowed one. The next couple hours involved a lot of vomiting 🤮(apparently extra points were awarded for doing it on the rug instead of the hardwood) and Dyson yakked up his half.

No such luck for Mr. Kirby who got to spend the next 9 hours in the ER. Inducing more vomiting didn’t work and imaging showed it was really big, so they went in an endoscope to try and retrieve it. It took some time and several different types of grabbers, but just before midnight they finally got it out! Very grateful he didn’t need abdominal surgery and that we’re back home.

All of our collies are members of the MWCR family so we want to be there for every part of their lives. We enjoy getting updates and celebrating 'gotcha' days, and we mourn with our adopters when they pass over the Rainbow Bridge, but sometimes they need us to be there for them in other ways.

Sweet Bosko was adopted a couple years ago and, sadly, his dad passed away last month. His dad's friend, who is also an MWCR adopter (and former BOD member), took him in immediately and has now officially made him a member of his family. We are so grateful that this allowed Bosko to go directly from one loving home to another.

What a wonderful Collie Frolic in Menomonee Falls, WI today! There were a couple light sprinkles early on but it turned out to be a perfect day for collies to play. Over 50 people and almost 40 collies (and honorary ā€˜collies’) gathered for fun, fellowship and frolicking. Thank you to everyone who participated and to The Hounds & Tap for providing such an amazing venue - I can’t wait to do it again next year!

Sweet senior Pawnee, 11 yr sable/white male, has been adopted and will be living in MN. He came to us when we got a call from a shelter asking for help. Pawnee had been in a home with two other Collies and some sheep, however when the owner became ill the dogs & sheep were heavily neglected. His owner was taken to the hospital after a welfare check and the animals were surrendered to the local authorities. Pawnee’s coat was in very bad shape when he arrived at the shelter, filthy and covered with f***s & urine. The shelter had to cut out many burrs and mats, and he actually had 2 collars and a rope buried in the matted fur around his neck.

Pawnee's foster home says that he is an overall sweet dog who loves to be petted and just wants a soft bed to lay on and some good food and maybe a bone to chew on. His new family is very pleased to have him join their pack and will do their best to keep him happy in their home for as long as he has left in his world. It's so wonderful when our seniors find their retirement home!

Charming Lassie, 3 yr old tri male has been adopted and will be living in SD. Lassie was surrendered due to his owner's failing health. We knew that he had had surgery to repair a broken leg due to being hit by a car a couple years ago and then a follow up surgery to strengthen the other leg. However when he got to his foster home it was obvious that something had gone wrong with that - he was not putting any weight on it and it was twisted out of place. So in March he had FHO surgery to repair the situation and his foster mom did an amazing job caring for him through the surgery and rehabilitation. Now his forever family will be continuing his care and, although he may not be running any marathons, his sweet personality is sure to make him a favorite wherever he goes. Congratulations big guy!

Handsome Phoenix, 4-7 yr old blue merle, has been adopted and will be living in MN. This sweet boy was found as a stray in MO and the local shelter, who we've worked with before, asked us to take him in because they knew how important it was that someone who understands the breed work to find him a home.

Phoenix is an appropriate name for this adorable guy because he wasn't always the handsome specimen he has become. As his pictures show, he was found severely emaciated and mange had caused all of his hair to fall out. And to make things even worse, he was positive for heartworm. He had been receiving treatment at the shelter since last September he was finally ready to be released to us in February. Once they contacted us, our wonderful fosterers John & Lisa, who live in MO, raced over to pick him up.

Unfortunately, after Phoenix arrived in his foster home they realized that he was favoring his left rear leg and there was swelling around the joint with X-rays showing something impinging on the bone. Fortunately, our veterinarian foster offered to take him and do further testing and it turns out the sweet boy also had a fungal infection, likely picked up from foraging for himself as a stray, that was affecting that joint and he will be on medication for that for a few months.

Happily, his new mom read his story in our newsletter and knew that she could be the perfect home for Phoenix as he continues to rise from the ashes. Although he'll still need more treatment and testing, our loving, happy boy will be able to do that while living in his forever home.
