Dig In! Yancey Community Garden

Dig In! Yancey Community Garden We work within our communities to grow and share from our gardens so that everyone can eat well. Founded in 2009, Dig In!

was a response to the recognition that almost no fresh vegetables were available to our local food relief agencies. Since our first plantings in April of 2010, we have grown and shared food so that everyone in Yancey County has access to food that supports their health and well being.

It's probably the last couple of weeks to get radishes from your garden or the farmers market, so enjoy this seasonal June recipe while it lasts!

1) Whisk together the lemon juice, oil, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl.

2) Thinly slice the radishes & chop the herbs. Add to the bowl and toss to coat in the dressing.

3) (optional) If you want to get fancy, you can toast raw sunflower seeds in a dry pan on medium heat. Stir them frequently so they don't burn, and toast them for about 5 minutes. Or skip this step and just use the seeds as they are.

4) Sprinkle in sunflower seeds and you're done!

It's a great week to join us in the garden! We always welcome new and returning folks to share the work and joys of growing a garden that gives. Our Work Together Days always start with warm hugs, a little stretch, and maybe a word or two to check in. Then we cooperatively garden together, planting, seeding, weeding, pruning, or trellising while connecting with the land and each other. This week you might get so plant candy roaster squashes, cucumbers, or trellis the beans.

We gather on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 12 pm and truly invite everyone to join us. Even if you've never gardened before, if you've got kiddos in tow, or if you have physical limitations, we'd love to gather with you among peaceful plants. And if you have the time, we sit down together for a bag lunch after our work ends.

Harvest Share begins one week from today! We have some exciting harvests coming out of our garden that we are thrilled to share with our neighbors.๐Ÿฅฆ

What's Harvest Share? It's a no-cost market with fresh, local, seasonal produce that is open to all. It's collaboratively hosted by Dig In, Reconciliation House, and TRACTOR Food and Farms. The walk-up market will be open each Wednesday from 10 am - noon, starting June 3, in the parking lot of West Burnsville Baptist Church. There will be two dates where there is no market: July 1 and August 12, so please put those on your calendar. ๐Ÿ—“

All are welcome because we believe everyone deserves to eat well. There is no proof of need, participants will simply be asked the number of people in each household. Please bring your own bags and consider picking up for a neighbor who could use a little extra community care. ๐Ÿ’—

We're also excited that this year we will begin hosting cooking demonstrations with the help of N.C. Cooperative Extension, Yancey County Center and . Each week they'll transform the gardens' bounty into yummy, easy-to-cook meals. Big thanks to those partners for adding this new and exciting attraction to our Harvest Share markets๐Ÿœ

We also welcome food scraps to contribute to Dig In's composting system. Anyone is welcome to bring compost whether or not you're picking up food. ๐Ÿ—‘

Phew, thanks for reading all this and see you soon!

We usually follow the old timers' advice to wait to plant summer crops until after Mother's Day, but this Monday night is supposed to get pretty chilly as well. We would consider holding off until later in the week to plant summer crops, and be ready to cover them when the nights dip in the low 40s.

While summer crops can survive temps in the 40s, they do not grow as efficiently. Oftentimes crops planted slightly later catch right up with the ones planted right out the gate.

Happy planting season everyone!
