A non-Profit organization dedicated to maintaining, creating, and promoting outdoor activities in the Black Mountains, home of Mt Mitchell the highest peak east of the Mississippi! The North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association conducts three main activities. 1) We lead hikes, general two per month, one a more strenuous hike and the second a more leisurely stroll; 2) We perferm maintenance on th

e trails of the Black Mountain Range, as well as conduct litter sweeps on NC-80 from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Carolina Hemlock Campground and clean the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway located in Yancey County; 3) We conduct special projects to meet our five goals (See Mission). Presently we have several projects underway including building a trail system at Mountain Heritage High School and at Mitchell High School, rerouting the Mountains-to-Sea Trail off of the road from the Black Mountain Campground to Neal's Creek, working to bring the Black Mountain Crest Trail into the Burnsville Town Square, and building an interactive website of all the trails in the Black Mountain Range. We recently completed a 20-page booklet on the "Trails of the Black Mountain Campground" and published 5,000 copies with the aid of a grant from the North Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation. We also have installed two webcams on our website that provide views of Mount Mitchell and a portion of the Black Mountain Range, one viewing the range from the West and the other from the East.

Homeplace Hosts Fund-Raiser for High Peaks Sept. 9

All are invited on Wed., Sept. 9 for an evening of fellowship, good food and great beer at Homeplace Beer Company in Burnsville, with a portion of the proceeds going to support Yancey’s NC High Peaks Trail Association.

The fun begins at 5 p.m. and from then until 9 p.m. Homeplace will donate 10 percent of their gross sales to High Peaks, a volunteer group that clears and maintains most of the hiking trails on the Black Mountains and elsewhere in the county.

All High Peaks members are encouraged to attend and bring their friends, but the event is not limited to members of the club. The more folks who come, the more food and drink consumed, the larger the donation for our hard-working club.

High Peaks will have a table selling tee shirts and offering information about its activities on the main floor. All you need to do is show up, order some food from Hog Hollow and/or drinks from Homeplace, take a table and enjoy!

High Peaks, founded in 2010, is a 501-(c)(3) non-profit that promotes hiking, conservation and outdoor recreation in Yancey. The club is the official “Friends of Mt. Mitchell State Park” organization, and has completed projects at the park that include installation of a low-watt Traveler Information radio station, installation of live web-cams and weather station and information screens in the park office.

High Peaks volunteers work most weeks year-round weed-eating our trails, clearing downed trees, building water diversions and steps and improving the hiking experience. Over the past 15 years club volunteers have donated thousands of hours of hard work to make Yancey a more fun and attractive place to live.

High Peaks Leads Lost Cove Hike Aug. 28

The N.C. High Peaks Trail Association will lead hikers into the historic abandoned community of Lost Cove on Friday, August 28. Settled during or shortly after the Civil War, Lost Cove is nestled above the Nolichucky River, and can only be reached on foot.

This very strenuous hike is about 7 miles long and will take 5+ hours to complete. We will descend about 1,200 feet in elevation to visit the Lost Cove ruins, buildings and cemetery, followed by a 1,200-foot climb back to our starting point. Only experienced hikers in good condition should attempt this hike.

Bring lunch, snacks, plenty of water, hiking poles if you use them and rain gear if the forecast looks threatening. Meet in the parking lot of the Rose’s Shopping Center in Burnsville at 8:30 a.m. in the corner overlooking the traffic light on Highway 19E. We will then carpool for the thirty minute ride to the trailhead.

Well behaved, leashed dogs are welcome, but this hike could be quite strenuous for them so they should be fit and experienced as well. Bring plenty of water for them and food if they need it. Also be prepared to clean up after your pup.

Thirteen hikers had a great day on the Boone Fork Trail. Our original plan was to hike part of Tanawha trail, but a last minute change due to rain and slippery rocks sent us further up The Blue Ridge Parkway. The weather cooperated and a fine hike was enjoyed by all! Thank you to all who came!

High Peaks hike, Friday August 14

Come join us for hike on a great trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 4 to 4.5 mile hike is a section of the Tanawha Trail. We will start at Rough Ridge and hike past the Linville Cove Viaduct. The trail continues to Stacked Rocks and we will end at Beacon Heights. We should have beautiful views of the mountains, maybe some mushrooms and late blooming flowers. Hike is moderate. Portions of the trail is rocky and could be slippery.
Please bring hiking poles (if used) plenty of water, snacks and maybe a sandwich.

Yancey County Transportation van will transport us there and back. For this service we ask for a $5 donation per passenger. We will meet at the park n ride, Hwy 19 near 80 North at 8:30 am Leashed Dogs are welcome on the hike but cannot ride the van. Van capacity is 11 riders so your spot has to be reserved. Debuting this weekend at the 70th Annual Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair in Burnsville our newly designed NCHP's t-shirts! Board member, Candie Smith and Inked Screen Printing and Design in Spruce Pine have done a fabulous job on these lightweight, breathable poly/cotton blend in a bluish grey athletic fit. Eleven hardy hikers braved foggy, damp conditions in the high alpine forest of the Black Mountain Crest Trail on Saturday. The 11.5 mile trek from Mount Mitchell State Park to Bolens Creek took over nine hours to complete. In the end we were all happy to be done, but also glad we did it.
