Shortbus Studio

Shortbus Studio Serving adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. RECLAIMING THE SHORT BUS LOUD AND PROUD!

In the winter of 2008, a group of adults with developmental disabilities decided to create an intuitive art and outdoor adventure program in Burnsville. Several of the artists wanted to name the studio Shortbus Studio because they said that the little yellow buses were a big part of their reality; they had to ride them everyday to and from school. They wanted to help make the symbol of the short,

yellow school bus cool so that they could be proud of it... and it worked! Because of the iconic logo they have been able to educate the community - especially young people - on how we are more alike than we are different. The name has been a very positive thing for the artists at Shortbus Studio.

This is a 2014 Halloween picture of the late, great, infamous criminal mastermind, Janis West! She might’ve looked adorable, sweet and precious, but she would rob you blind and cuss you out without any hesitation. We have the funniest Janis stories and memories! She was definitely one of a kind, and a great ambassador for folks who are differently abled. She made so many people feel comfortable in her presence… even when she was stealing the cell phones out of their pocketbooks. (One time she was caught with six in her purse.) We’re not supposed to have favorites, but she was definitely one of our favorites.

Zora loved helping animals, making art, going on adventures and storytelling! Her youthful spirit was inspiring. She had more energy in her seventies than most people half her age. Snorkeling with whale sharks, or spending time in the clay studio, she was always busy. We were so grateful to have been a part of her life. 💛

The passing of one of our participants is never easy, but this one has been particularly hard. Tim was the sweetest, funniest, occasionally grumpiest, most precious man we had the privilege to serve. He was a comedian, daredevil, pizza connoisseur, dancer, and swimming machine. We are so very thankful that we had the opportunity to know you. 💔❤️‍🩹❤️

I shook the world. Yes, indeed! Looks like technology companies are starting to take accessibility into consideration. It’s amazing what people ❤️ who are so often dismissed ❤️ can do when given the opportunity to fully express themselves.

We were contacted by the Senior Casting Coordinator from the Emmy Award Winning A&E docu-series team that created “Born This Way” and the documentary “Autism: The Musical.”

* The company is looking for individuals with BIG PERSONALITIES who also have intellectual disabilities, and who are enthusiastic about filmmaking. They are casting for a new reality show to be filmed in Los Angeles. We inquired about supports in place for participants. They plan to fly cast out with a support person/conservator/parent for the duration of filming, which could be up to 8 weeks.

** Apparently, Shortbus Studio has a small following in Hollywood?! Yay! If you can think of someone who meets their criteria, private message us and we’ll send you the contact information. Happy holidays to everyone!
