My yard and garden are a mess! Now I don't feel so bad...

I’m hibernating inside this “dead” flower stem right now.
In early spring, I’ll emerge and help pollinate your garden.

But before that happens, I’m about to be cut down for “winter cleanup.”

And I’m not alone.

What winter garden cleanup really removes 🌱

1️⃣ Many native bees overwinter inside hollow or pithy plant stems.
Cut the stems too early, and they never make it to spring.

2️⃣ Butterflies and moths spend winter as chrysalises, caterpillars, or eggs—often hidden in fallen leaves.
Rake the leaves, and they’re gone.

3️⃣ Ladybugs cluster at plant bases, in leaf litter, and under debris to survive the cold.
Cleanup breaks up those shelters.

4️⃣ Beneficial wasps, next season’s natural pest control, overwinter as cocoons or adults tucked into old plant material.
Remove the habitat, and you remove the helpers.

All of this happens quietly.
Accidentally.
With the best intentions.

What to do right now instead ⏳

- Pause major garden cleanup until late spring

- Leave dead stems standing — insects are inside them

- Leave fallen leaves where they are — life is resting underneath

A good rule of thumb:
🟢 Wait until daytime temperatures are consistently above 50°F (10°C) before cutting back or clearing debris.

No special tools.
No extra work.
Just a little patience.

One honest question 🤔

Can you live with a “messy” garden for a few more weeks?

Because here’s the real choice:

A perfectly tidy winter garden… with very few pollinators.
Or a slightly wild one… with hundreds—sometimes thousands—of free workers ready in spring.

The shears can wait.
Their lives can’t.
