We provide financial assistance to help cover critical health-related expenses that ensure every child has access to the care they deserve. Hetta Gilbert provides health related assistance to the children of the Des Moines County, Iowa. We have over 110 members who volunteer their time and items to raise money. Since 1991 we've given back over $500,000 to the children of Des Moines County. The fun
ds are raised at the annual resale held in October. The funds raised at this annual sale provide glasses, prescriptions, dental care, doctor visits and other health related assistance. We are contacted by the school nurses, doctors offices and other organizations who provide medical care to children. History:
Hetta Gilbert lived from 1835 till 1911. Her daughter Cate was born May 27, 1863 in Burlington. Hetta Gilbert formed the Norman Circle of King’s Daughters in 1866. She became the president of the Normans Circle January, 1896 and held that office until her death. Hetta Gilbert was the founder of many great things in the Burlington area. The Circle was very active in supporting the community hospitalization needs of children. They had various types of fund raisers to raise money for the needy. In 1920 a Junior Norman Circle was organized by Cate. On Feb 22, 1922 they renamed it as the Hetta Gilbert Circle after the founder Hetta Gilbert. The resale was first run in 1929 and netted the grand sum of $30.00. This sale has a long history of not only being a great sale but also providing medical assistance to the children in Des Moines County. From 1929 to 1959 the sale was held at various locations in Burlington.. The Hetta Gilbert Resale has been held at the Perkins Park Shelter House since 1959.This organization has always been known for helping the medical needs of children in our community.
