Local historian Diana Carlisle will be speaking about the Glassville neighborhood at our meeting on October 2nd.
CHAMPLAIN GLASS COMPANY MARKER TO BE DEDICATED THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 30, AT 1 PM IN BATTERY PARK, BURLINGTON
We all know that Battery Park served as a military camp in the War of 1812, but did you also know that it was the site of Burlington's first manufacturing enterprise--The Champlain Glass Company.? On hand will be Diana Carlisle, who has studied the company and its contributions to the development of Burlington. She has also worked to help create this memorial. For the definitive history of the glassworks, see her article published by the Vermont Historical Society athttps://vermonthistory.org/journal/68/vt683_402.pdf
The Champlain Glass Company was formed in 1827, by an act of the General Assembly. It was located in the northeast section of the park. On some of the old maps, the area was even called Glassville. In 1840, Smith, then owner of the company, and some of his business partners set aside some of the company property to be used by the city "as a public Common. . . forever." Hence: The Battery Park we all know and love.
