Families raising children in kinship, foster, conditional custody, or other disrupted family situations can sometimes face unexpected legal and financial pressures connected to immigration or asylum-related processes.

If your family includes children in kinship care, foster care, conditional custody, or another caregiving arrangement impacted by immigration-related financial hardship, reaching out early for support may help prevent additional stress on the household.

======== FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE AWARENESS ==========

A new federal “Annual Asylum Fee” (AAF) is now being applied to some asylum applications that have been pending for more than one year. Current reports indicate the fee is $102 per application annually, and missing deadlines could affect an active asylum case or related work authorization.

VKAP does not take political positions on immigration policy. Our focus is on the wellbeing and stability of children and caregivers who may be impacted by complex family or legal circumstances.

Families who may be struggling financially with this fee can learn more or connect with support resources through:

==========================================

Hello,

I was told there may now be an Annual Asylum Fee connected to my pending asylum case. I am caring for children in my household and I am worried about the financial impact of this fee.

I am trying to understand:
• whether the fee applies to my case,
• when the deadline is,
• how to pay it correctly, and
• whether any financial assistance or community support may be available.

I do not want to miss an important deadline because I am confused about the process.

Can someone please help me understand the next steps or connect me with the right resource?

Thank you.
