Charge Against Cancer

Charge Against Cancer charitable organization funding canine cancer research at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine

In 2010 our golden retriever Charger was diagnosed with a Stage 2 Mast Cell Tumor. The prognosis was not good; Charger was given 6 months to live. However, surgical, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine have given Charger a new lease on life. Charge Against Cancer funds the ideas, the initial clinical trials that can eventually lead to

national canine cancer studies (such as the canine cancer vaccine trial). That is why no donation is too small and every dollar can make a difference! One hundred percent of the donations to Charge Against Cancer support research for cancer treatments and clinical trials, advanced diagnostics and equipment for treating cancer; and canine oncology education.

Thanks to your continued support, Charge Against Cancer is now big enough to fund its own studies (without additional monies from another source). These are the two proposals receiving grants from CAC next year.

Because of numerous questions over the weekend, I've updated the size chart. Again, please share!

FDA Conditionally Approves First Oral Tablet to Treat Lymphoma in Dogs

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conditionally approved Laverdia-CA1 (verdinexor tablets) to treat dogs with lymphoma, a type of cancer of the lymph nodes and lymphatic system. Laverdia-CA1 works to prevent certain proteins from leaving the nucleus of cancer cells, thereby allowing these proteins to control the growth and prevent the spread of cancerous cells in dogs.

Laverdia-CA1 is the first conditionally approved oral treatment for dogs with lymphoma. Because Laverdia-CA1 is orally administered, owners of dogs with a diagnosis of lymphoma, following a veterinarian prescription and safety directions detailed in a client information sheet, can administer this treatment at home. Laverdia-CA1 is given orally twice per week, with at least 72 hours between doses. Laverdia-CA1 is the second treatment for lymphoma in dogs that the FDA has conditionally approved. Tanovea-CA1, which received conditional approval in 2016, is an injectable drug.

Has it been 10 years??? Ten years ago my Charger was given 6 months to live. But his enrollment in a clinical trial, trying an experimental treatment, saved his life and changed mine forever.
I know it's been a rough year for everyone, but today on Charger's birthday, please share this post and donate whatever you can to Charge Against Cancer at the Univ. of WI School of Veterinary Medicine.

Thank you to John Rasmussen Cartoons for sharing this piece that tears at the heart of all who've had to deal with canine cancer.

I know in these trying times, the last thing people are thinking about is canine cancer, donations, and research, but I have exciting news! Charge Against Cancer will be funding a new research study on Lymphoma, one of the cruelest types of canine cancer. Please see the attached abstract of the project.
Your continued donations are critically important to the progression on how research evolves. Support of these small studies leads to the big studies which in turn can lead to a cure.

Our Story

In 2010 our golden retriever Charger was diagnosed with a Stage 2 Mast Cell Tumor. The prognosis was not good; Charger was given 6 months to live. However, the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine was running a clinical trial with an experimental chemotherapy regiment. After chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation treatments, Charger got a new lease on life and lived 6 more wonderful years before passing away cancer free. Charge Against Cancer was created to honor his fight/survival and to fund canine cancer research at the University.
