Vermont Garden Network

Vermont Garden Network Gardening where we live, learn, work & play. This is closely tied to the larger statewide and regional discussions about how we feed ourselves.

The Vermont Garden Network is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to the growth and success of community and school gardens. Established in 2001, VGN has helped start and sustain hundreds of gardens all over Vermont and has connected thousands of children and adults to fresh, healthy food and sustainable food production practices. VGN provides training, resources, technical assistance, and funding for

community and school garden groups around the state. Students in our Community Teaching Gardens learn how to plant, cultivate, harvest, and preserve fresh vegetables and to use their new skills in service to the community. Our work is rooted in the understanding that community and school gardens have food security, health, social, economic, and environmental benefits. Garden education provides essential skills that people need to be active participants in the food system - to be producers, not just consumers. The results of growing food in community are impressive: neighbors develop friendships and support systems, children try (and like!) new foods, people of all ages gain new awareness of environmental issues, and neglected land is transformed into productive space that provides fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables.

Registration is OPEN for our two collective gardens Seedsong and Starr. The season runs from April to October with weekly shifts and a monthly work day. As a member of the collective you will receive weekly harvests including vegetables, herbs & flowers, hands on guidance, and a tight knit community that manages the garden together.

Not sure if a collective garden works for you? A  collective garden is a good option if you want to grow your own your food this season but:

🍅 Are new to gardening and want some hands on guidance
🍅Don’t have enough time to manage a garden on your own
🍅 Don’t have access to land or garden related resources
🍅Won’t be around for a chunk of time during the season 🍅Want to garden in community

It’s our 25th anniversary! Just like you we are using this wintering season to salivate over seed catalogs and plan our gardens. We are also putting together a free public workshop schedule. Stayed tuned! Such an honor to be a part of this community for two and a half decades! Together we GROW! 🥕🍅🧅🍆🌱🥔🥦🥒🥬🫜🫛🫑🌶️💚

We are trying something new - and it’s looking good thus far! We installed six raised beds in the Greenhouse at Landry Park. They are perfectly sized to fit underneath the pallet tables we use for seed starting in spring. These raised beds allow us to extend our growing season for at least a couple months in the fall and then again in late winter. A gravity-fed drip irrigation system on a timer is keeping soil moist and reducing how often we visit the greenhouse.
We seeded spinach, arugula, cilantro and a spicy brassica mix in two beds. The other four beds are tended to by Bhutanese families who seeded two varieties of mustard greens, cilantro and dill.
Several gardeners have asked us to overwinter peppers in pots, but we aren’t planning on turning on the heater until March. We did agree to welcome a potted tulsi plant, a sacred herb that one Bhutanese gardener wants to keep alive as long as possible.

This is what gardening in community looks like ✨ Our harvests are becoming more bountiful by the week. We had our first kohlrabi and fennel harvests this week, in addition to kale, Swiss chard, green cabbage, sprouting broccoli, peas, herbs, and more.

This past week we held our second garden potluck of the season! Once a month, members of our collective gardens gather for a potluck and garden tour. June’s events took place at the Starr Collective garden, where we enjoyed dishes (some of which featured garden fresh veggies!), got a guided tour of the garden, and connected with fellow collective gardeners ✨🌱🍽️🌞

Our early season hard work is paying off as we have already harvested bok choy, lettuce heads, asparagus, kale, herbs, and more from our Starr and Seedsong collective gardens✨

While our collective gardens are at full capacity for the year, we have plenty of opportunities to get involved as a volunteer. Link in bio or message us for more info! 🌱

It’s official! Tomatoes are in the ground at Starr & Seedsong Collective gardens 🍅🪏 We interplant basil and sweet alyssum in the tomato beds to attract beneficial insects and deter unwanted pests.

These plants were started in the Vermont Garden Network Greenhouse at Landry Park located in Winooski, where they have been growing for the past 5 weeks 🌱
