Ryan Hawks was a dynamic human being with a passion and love for the mountains and skiing. As a competitor on the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour, Ryan was well loved, and known as "Flyin Ryan." In 2011, Ryan was injured at the Kirkwood, CA tour stop and passed away a few days later due the internal injuries he sustained from his fall. Ryan will always be remembered for

being a true participant in life who lived every minute. About the Foundation:

The Flyin Ryan Hawks Foundation's mission is to challenge students, athletes and adults to explore what is important to them, then take ownership by composing a set of personal Core Values to guide their attitude and decisions. We believe that individuals who determine and follow their own Core Values will make better decisions, experience a more engaged life, and be empowered to achieve their goals with passion and determination. We make scholarships available to adventurers who demonstrate Ryan's core values and whose passion is hampered by financial constraint. We also offer the Decisions program as a curriculum to guide the development of Core Values for students, which are then shared with their peers, teachers, coaches, family and others.

The Flyin Ryan Hawks Foundation is seeking a motivated,
self-driven, and passionate Marketing Coordinator to help support and grow the Foundation’s mission through marketing, community engagement, and relationship management. This is an opportunity for someone who is excited to make a meaningful impact within a volunteer-driven organization while gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, social media management, and community outreach.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who takes ownership of responsibilities, thrives in an independent environment, and is passionate about helping others through the Foundation’s mission and values.

Welcome to the Adventure Scholarship family Nate Harvey!

Nate Harvey works with CyberTracker Conservation and its North American representative, TCNA, to train and certify wildlife trackers in the identification of wildlife tracks and sign. He also teaches advanced trailing skills, enabling trackers to lead groups along fresh trails to observe animals in their natural habitat without alerting them to human presence.

As a CyberTracker Evaluator, Nate has trained many of his fellow evaluators throughout North America and Europe. His students include college professors, wildlife researchers, biologists, land trust managers, hunters, and wilderness enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels, from beginners to Professional and Specialist-level trackers.

Throughout his career, Nate has worked alongside Master Trackers in both North America and South Africa, gaining extensive experience in the field and contributing to the advancement of wildlife tracking education.

Before pursuing tracking as a profession, Nate enjoyed a successful career in the performing arts. He was an actor, playwright, and theater producer in New York City, where he co-founded The Barrow Group theater company (TBG) in 1986.

He is using his award to observe indigenous master trackers in Namibia. This award has been sponsored by our friends at Jersey Mike's!

Welcome to the Adventure Scholarship family Aman Deshmukh!

Aman is a rising senior at Foothill High School in Pleasanton, California, where he served as pole vault captain for two years before sustaining a spinal cord injury during track practice in March 2025. This life-changing event left him a quadriplegic, using a power wheelchair with limited hand function and no leg function, but it did not change his core identity as a resilient, positive, fun-loving, adventure-seeking teenager who loves connecting with people and contributing to his community. Since his injury, he has used adaptive equipment to try rock climbing, swimming, scuba diving, biking, and soccer, and has also launched a student-athlete safety awareness program. With the tremendous support of family and friends, he is determined to continue living life to the fullest while giving back by raising awareness for sports safety, accessible design, and inclusive education.

Aman is using his award to explore adaptive sports and advocate for accessible design and education.

Introducing recent Adventure Scholarship recipient Tanasha Sayi!

Tanasha is a Malawian fashion and textile student, creative storyteller, and aspiring global creative whose world is built from imagination, reinvention, and curiosity. From redesigning clothing as a child to building a floral origami business and walking the runway for internationally recognised designer Lilly Alfonso, she is constantly drawn to spaces where creativity and identity meet.

Currently studying at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Tanasha explores fashion not just as clothing, but as emotion, culture, and self-expression. She is passionate about visual storytelling, modeling, content creation, and discovering new perspectives through art and human connection. Through every project, she hopes to inspire others to see creativity as something fearless, transformative, and deeply personal as well as bring Malawi into international creative spaces and share the beauty, talent, and creativity that exists within her home country with the world.

She is using her award to attend a 3-week creative study abroad experience at the London College of Fashion.

Welcome to the Adventure Scholarship family Sadie Zakreski!

Sadie is a 16-year-old 10th grader from Boulder, Colorado. She loves the outdoors, especially rock climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and camping. A competitive big mountain freeskier, she qualified for the Junior Freeski Championships last season. This season, she competed in Chile in August before an early-season accident resulted in a fractured L1 vertebra, sidelining her for several weeks. Despite the setback, she returned to competition and earned several podium finishes, narrowly missing qualification for the Junior Freeski Championships again. This summer, Sadie looks forward to working as a camp counselor at her local rock climbing gym, while also spending time biking, hiking, and camping. She will be using her award to fly to Chile to compete in an IFSA Big Mountain Camp.

Introducing new Adventure Scholarship recipient Summer Hargrave!

Summer is a 23-year-old Dartmouth graduate and aspiring outdoor educator who discovered a love for hiking, paddling, and backpacking in college through the Dartmouth Outing Club. She went on to lead multi-day kayaking expeditions, canoe 220 miles down the Connecticut River with classmates, and build a strong foundation in backcountry leadership. Since graduating in 2025, she has worked on Moosilauke Ravine Lodge crew, completed an environmental education fellowship in the Galápagos, and backpacked through Ecuador and Guatemala. In summer 2026, she is leading high school trips in the Sierra Nevada and plans to thru-hike Vermont’s Long Trail afterward. This scholarship will help cover the major costs of that 20–30 day trek, especially food and gear.

Update From One of Our Adventure Scholars - Chris B received his Adventure Scholarship award back in 2019 and we’re excited to share this update from him!

Its been quite the adventure, that’s for sure!

The gliding I did with the grant certainly set me on the course for success thru my career. I ended up getting my commercial license and flying for work, starting out as a float pilot in Northern Ontario. Eventually I began flying out on the coast in British Columbia, an absolutely gorgeous area of the country and a challenging area to fly. Most recently, I began flying old turboprop airplanes in the Arctic and Antarctica. I flew a NASA reconnaissance looking at a lidar survey of the ellesmere glacier in the high arctic to track the level of ice change as a result of climate change.

This past winter, I did a research mission for 2 months in Antarctica. Some of it, I was living in a tent. I did 4 trips to the south pole. While I was down there, I managed to run a full marathon…. It was my first time running more than 8 miles. I’ve been picking up mountaineering as a skill as part of my work for an adventurous part tome on my days off in these field locations.

I can’t thank you enough for giving me the start I needed!
