John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt are coming to the Starker-Leopold House to visit with Aldo!!
LLA is starting off this year's Iowa Leopold "Month" with our annual A Sand County Almanac reading on Sunday (the 15th) @ 3:00 PM.
A special addition will be a video called Visionary Voices Then and Now. It features John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt, and Aldo Leopold together. Each character tells how they became involved in conservation and the unusual opportunity of discussing conservation together. Hope you can join us on Sunday.

Hope you are having a peaceful start to the winter beauty. LLA is so thankful for receiving two anonymous matching grants in 2025 to further our goals and projects-- a $25K grant to help pay down the mortgage on the Starker-Leopold House overlooking the river, and a $65K matching grant to start improvements on the Children's Barn Discovery Center.

Please help LLA (an all-volunteer non-profit organization) reach our fundraising goals with a donation to start off your new year gifts for conservation. Your tax-deductible contribution will let LLA maximize these donations and further our success. You can send a check or visit the Leopold Alliance website and click on Pay Pal. Please join us on Friday Oct. 3 at the Art Center of Burlington from 5-8. It's the grand opening of the exhibit "Unearthed; Tracing Aldo Leopold's Legacy through Time and Soil" by LLA's friend, Chicago artist Pam Sloan. Pam will be giving a short talk about her work at 5:00 during the reception.
You may remember that Pam has visited us several times to bury her watercolor paper on the Starker-Leopold grounds. After the fungus and bacteria in the soil work on the paper, Pam digs it up again and uses it to create her artwork, creating stunning pieces of nature. Here you can see Leopold's Night Wolf. The show runs from Oct. 2 through the 29th.

Let's get together for some volunteer work at the Leopold School Prairie this Saturday Sep 13th @ 9:00 AM while it's still cool, for about an hour.
We are continuing to get ready for some school classes and some of the visitors to the Leopold Houses this Fall. The late summer blooming Rough Blazing Star was very productive this year and lots of seed almost ready for harvesting. There are still a few in bloom.
During some prep weeding (two truckloads), we were glad to see some class experiments going on for saving milkweed seed.
Bring a clipper & gloves and come give a hand or just sit and supervise/watch! Bring a friend too.

Leopold School Prairie Classroom Clean Up!!
This Saturday morning at 9:00 am we'll meet for an hour at the prairie to do a little weeding and dressing up for the start of the school year. Join in & bring a friend not familiar with the prairie.
The coneflowers, compass plants, verbenas and others are blooming nicely. Butterflies and other pollinators are enjoying their home. Maybe we can find some caterpillars on the many different milkweed species.
We will have pick-ups there to load the weeds and haul them away.
Hope to see you there.
