Stop Burlington’s McNeil Plant Expansion

HEALTH The McNeil Generating station, which burns 72 tons of wood per hour, pumps out toxic particulate matter that is known to cause cancer, asthma and worsen existing diseases.

ECONOMICS Biomass plants like McNeil have an average lifespan of 20-30 years, but McNeil has been online for almost 40. Across the region, biomass plants are closing because they are inefficient, highly polluting, and no longer considered a renewable source of energy. It is unlikely that McNeil will continue being financially viable, and spending $43 million on the aging plant for this expansion is a risky investment.

CLIMATE McNeil is not actually “carbon neutral” or “net zero”, like we used to think. When McNeil burns trees that once kept carbon out of the atmosphere, that carbon goes right back into the air, making McNeil the single largest stationary source of wood-burning greenhouse gas emissions in the state.

Join your neighbors and say NO to this bad idea.

When: Jun 30, 2023, 5:45 PM

It's that time again!

Join your local 350Burlington community to kick off the summer with a BIKE BLAST. We'll take a leisurely bike ride through the streets of Burlington while listening to a great soundtrack and spreading the word about climate justice.

We'll gather for the BLAST at 5:45 pm in Battery Park, where we'll pass out wearable and shareable messaging about divestment from the Fossil Fuel Industry. Then we'll head out at 6 pm in the sweet late daylight to ride for around an hour. We'll end up back at our starting spot, eat pizza, talk climate activism, and watch the sun set.

If it's raining, we may cancel. We'll keep you updated here.

Attention Burlington! Join the 350 Burlington node on June 3, 2022 from 5:45 to 7:00 PM for a Bike Blast! 350Burlington will be taking over the streets again in celebration of bike riding — a sustainable mode of transport, AND to spread the word about divesting from Chase Bank, the #1 funder of the fossil fuel industry. stopthemoneypipeline.com/

The BIKE BLAST, organized by the 350 Burlington community, will begin by gathering at 5:45 pm at the north end of Battery Park, and start riding at 6:00 pm. We'll ride for under an hour, while broadcasting a people-powered playlist, and experience Burlington as the weekend kicks back and the shadows are long (sunset 8:32 pm). The ride will end with treats at Battery Park - what could be better!

Grab a bike, bike lights and your spring riding clothes and join us as we message joyfully about Defunding Oil and embodying a vision of a sustainable, energetic world. Head for Greenride Bike Share if you don't currently have wheels, and check 350 Burlington, VT for weather updates.
