The Project
Built in 1897, this historic gem provided a basic necessity to the entire City of Burlington—water. Originally owned by the City of Burlington, this monstrosity has had many stories to tell. Combing through the public library for history and data about the building it’s apparent there has always been cyclical ‘plans’ of what is can be. Most of these plans have good intentions, but n
one have come to fruition. Maybe its politics, maybe there is a lack of commitment, maybe people simply don’t care. On many occasions people have said ‘I wish someone would do something with that building’. I have a ‘something’, and it’s for everyone. What we want to do
I’d like to revive this building, and use the space for three specific functions:
First; an event’s and banquet hall. We’d like to host weddings, prom, company parties, fundraisers, birthdays or anything you or the community needs a large place to host. The city is very service based, and we want to use those services. We would like to work with local professionals and vendors to provide services for our events. From catering, photographers, florists, beauticians, all the way to the wedding cake--this building, can build your business. Second; a community center to host workshops, self-help classes and bi-weekly bingo. We would like to offer the space to individuals who are experts in their field and want to volunteer their time. Workshops for creative writing, tutoring sessions, to resume writing, if you need more space for something, we want to help. For those looking for something local to do, we’re going to offer bingo night, with proceeds going to charity. Third; a small museum, something we can add to the city tour, and the national registry. We will build a small museum, with the history of the property. Procuring some of the original materials used to build (the pipe was wood at one point). Anyone who is or was affiliated with the property, we want to capture your accounts. We want to add to this little city, not detract from it. Our business model consists of limited hours, and reservations. We will remain open consistent to the other historic buildings in the city, otherwise we will maintain minimum hours. Our goal is 26 events per year up to 150 people, bingo twice a month, and limited evening workshops. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/burlingtonwaterworks/burlington-waterworks-banquet-museum-and-community
