The Solaris Vocal Ensemble is dedicated to the belief that choral music - the powerful combination of music and language - can energize and inspire the human spirit. Our mission is to bring light and meaning to great choral works that span the ages, through compelling performances imbued with passion and musical artistry. Based in Burlington, Vermont, this ensemble of 20-30 auditioned singers is l

ed by Artistic Director, Dr. Dawn Willis, and Assistant Director, Frank Whitcomb. Solaris performs a wide variety of choral literature ranging from evocative and introspective a ca****la selections from the Renaissance to dramatic 21st century works involving a variety of instrumental forces.

☀️Solaris is proud to support members who are music educators by providing the opportunity to conduct our choir for a semester during the concert season - meet Julia Stacom, a member of the Solaris soprano section AND this spring's conducting intern! When she's not conducting a piece for Solaris on Tuesday nights, she's the chorus teacher at Edmunds Middle School during the day.

🦋 Blue Skies - Solaris Vocal Ensemble's Spring 2026 Concerts

What do Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and a 16th-century madrigal have in common? This spring, Solaris brings them together in a program where world premieres meet Renaissance madrigals and jazz.

Two world premieres by composer-in-residence James Stewart anchor the program: fresh arrangements of Berlin's "Blue Skies" and Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" (both from 1926) that you won't hear anywhere else.
Renaissance madrigals by Weelkes and Morley get jazzy reinterpretations by Bob Chilcott, performed with Nick Browne on bass and Andy Gagnon on drums. Plus Grieg's Three Songs of Summer, Stanford's ethereal "The Blue Bird," and a lush "Moonlight in Vermont."
