AAPI Heritage Month is an opportunity to learn, reflect, celebrate, and support the many cultures, histories, and communities that make up Asian American and Pacific Islander identities.

Respectful celebration goes beyond trends, stereotypes, or surface-level understanding. It starts with listening, learning, and recognizing the diversity within AAPI communities.

There is no single AAPI experience — and taking time to learn from different voices, stories, and histories helps build stronger and more thoughtful communities for everyone.

What’s something you’ve learned about AAPI communities over the years?

We’re continuing our series Learning About Our Neighbors 💛

This is Part 2 of our conversation about Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Earlier today, we explored the history behind AAPI Heritage Month, labor exploitation, exclusion, and why May was chosen for this observance.

In this post, we’re continuing the conversation by exploring stereotypes, representation, identity, and why nuance matters when talking about AAPI communities. AAPI is not one single experience, culture, or identity. The term includes many distinct communities with different histories, languages, traditions, and lived experiences.

We’re also exploring how harmful stereotypes — including the “model minority” myth and the idea of Asian Americans as perpetual outsiders — can erase complexity, individuality, and real struggles within these communities.

Take a moment to swipe through. If something stood out to you, share this with someone you’re learning alongside. 💛

Sources and further reading available on the final slide.

We’re continuing our series Learning About Our Neighbors 💛

May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month — a time to recognize the history, resilience, cultures, and contributions of AAPI communities across the United States.

The observance originally began as a single week established by Congress in the late 1970s before later expanding into the month-long recognition we know today.

AAPI Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate two pivotal moments in Asian American history:
- the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843
- and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, built in large part through the labor of exploited Chinese immigrants.

AAPI is an umbrella term that includes many distinct communities, cultures, ethnicities, languages, and histories across Asia and the Pacific Islands.

In this first post, we’re exploring the history behind AAPI Heritage Month and why these conversations still matter today.

Take a moment to swipe through. This is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Tonight at 7 PM, we’ll continue the conversation by exploring stereotypes, identity, representation, and why understanding nuance matters. 💛

Last year, Real Jyniuz took the stage and shared his story — speaking on his experiences growing up in Burlington, the racism he faced, and what spaces like this truly mean.

Moments like this are why Juneteenth matters.

It’s not just about gathering — it’s about creating space for voices to be heard, stories to be shared, and community to grow stronger together.

We’re honored to have him returning to the stage again this year. 💛

Our friends Wisconsin Bail Out The People Movement recently hosted “Lessons from Minneapolis,” where labor and community leaders gathered to discuss how communities are organizing, supporting one another, and building people power in response to challenges impacting workers and families.

This is what community care looks like in action!

Finish the sentence in the comments:

This week’s book is Dream Big, Little One — a beautifully illustrated introduction to Black women in history whose courage, creativity, and determination helped shape the world around them.

From writers and activists to pilots and scientists, each woman featured in this book reminds young readers that big dreams can grow into powerful change. Even when the world tried to limit them, these women continued to speak up, create, lead, and inspire future generations.

This is a wonderful read for introducing children to history in a way that feels empowering, accessible, and full of possibility!

A reminder from our ongoing conversations around microaggressions, accountability, and community care:

A lot of difficult conversations break down when people focus only on intent and not impact.

Intent matters — but impact matters too.

Someone can mean well and still cause harm. Acknowledging that doesn’t automatically make someone a bad person. It creates an opportunity to listen, reflect, repair, and grow.

Community care requires more than good intentions. It also requires empathy, accountability, and a willingness to understand experiences outside our own.

We’re so excited to have this incredible Milwaukee-based artist, poet, actress, and teaching artist joining this year’s celebration. 💛

Saleaqua brings powerful storytelling, real emotion, and unforgettable energy through her poetry, music, and performance. Her work is bold, inspiring, vulnerable, and deeply rooted in self-expression — the kind of performance that truly stays with you.

Whether she’s on stage performing or uplifting others through teaching and creativity, she brings authenticity and passion into every space she enters.

Trust us… this is a performance you do NOT want to miss 👀✨
