Today's photo highlights Burlington's oldest building at the intersection of Main Street and Senter Avenue.

F.D. Mann Block / Bank Building
Constructed in 1889, the F.D. Mann Block, also known as the Bank Building, is Burlington's oldest structure. Built by railroad man Jilson and his partner Newell, it originally housed the Burlington State Bank and then the Stock Growers Bank.

A notable feature of the building are the bricks which were molded from the Beaver Creek clay.

Beginning in May 1889, the building served as the temporary Kit Carson County Courthouse. The first official county meeting was held there on May 25, 1889, with Elias G. Davis, Jacob H. Brammeier, and L.B. Decker appointed as commissioners.

These three served until the general election in November 1889, when voters elected Elias G. Davis, D.C. Walton, and E.W. Morgan as the county’s first official commissioners.

Honoring Service During Military Appreciation Month

May is Military Appreciation Month, with May 1 recognized as Loyalty Day. This is a time to reflect on our nation’s enduring freedom and the sacrifices made to preserve it.

In that spirit, we honor Jeremiah Harrel Sr. for his service during the Revolutionary War.

Born near the Pedee River in South Carolina, Jeremiah Harrel enlisted in the Continental Army in April 1776, while residing in Orangeburg, SC. He bravely fought in the Battle of Sullivan's Island in June 1776, as well as the Battle of Brier Creek in March 1779.

Thank you Private Harrel for your courageous contributions to the birth of our nation!

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Harrel family for sharing the legacy of their patriot ancestor.

Today's photo spotlight takes us back to 1898 to showcase three early landmarks of Burlington, Colorado: the Burlington School, the Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) parsonage, and the M.E. Church.

The Methodist Episcopal Church was officially established on February 25, 1888, with a founding congregation of 36 members. This occurred a few months prior to Burlington's incorporation on May 15, 1888.

In the 1889 election, a proposal to fund a new $4,000 school building was placed on the ballot. With voter approval and a generous land donation, the project quickly moved forward. The result was a stately two story brick schoolhouse, a proud symbol of the commitment to education. Adjusted for inflation, the construction cost would equate to approximately $139,000 today.
