Six years ago, I had a wild idea to open my own prom dress “shop” where girls could find new or gently used dresses completely free. I had just stepped into the Miss America Opportunity and quickly realized how expensive dresses are for something you wear once. I wanted to combine my love of fashion with my heart for service, and that’s how “A Queen’s Closet” began.
At first, it was simple. A few Facebook posts asking for dresses people no longer needed. Before long, my parents’ basement was filled with gowns, shoes, and jewelry. With the help of my cousin’s boutique space, I hosted a weekend event where girls could come shop the collection and find something for prom. My goal was never huge. I just wanted to help even one girl feel confident and beautiful.
Somewhere along the way, it became so much more. I used to keep track of every dress and every girl who came through, but after 300, I stopped counting. Over the years, I estimate we’ve reached more than 800 girls and given away over 600 dresses. What started as a “silly idea” turned into something far bigger than I ever imagined.
I’ve shared that this would be my last year running the event, and that part is still true. Many people have asked what would happen to the remaining dresses, which is a fair question. My original plan was to eventually pass them along to organizations doing similar work.
But yesterday, as we closed out the storage unit that held everything after it outgrew my parents’ basement, something unexpected happened. The dresses are gone. Not because they were all taken during the event, but because something truly special came together behind the scenes.
Details are still being finalized, but I can promise you this - “A Queen’s Closet” isn’t over.
Stay tuned.
