This day, 79 years ago, an amazing woman came into this world. Her time in it may have been cut short, but she may an INCREDIBLE impact on so many.
That woman was my high school drama teacher, Mrs. Mary Pat Sutherland. She was an extraordinary person and I'm so thankful to have learned from her all those years ago. So much of what I do now is because of Mrs. Sutherland. 💜

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY, MRS. SUTHERLAND!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MRS. SUTHERLAND!
77 years ago today Mary Pat Sutherland was born in Sheboygan, WI. In 1969 she was hired to teach at Dwight D. Eisenhower High School in New Berlin, WI. There should would teach for two decades and impact so many students' lives. Especially those of us lucky enough to have her as a Drama teacher and director.
After graduating from college I started my career in theater arts, mainly as a choreographer, I was given so many opportunities to work with children and teens. As time progressed I added theater teacher to my resume working with various community theater education programs. For 14 years I was the choreographer for a high school in WA state and because of my experience there along with the joy of teaching theater to youth I went back to school and received an MA in Education and began my public school teaching career.
As luck would have it I was hired to teach Language Arts/English and, eventually, speech/drama. Mrs. Sutherland was always the person I modeled myself after. She made English class enjoyable and so interesting and her drama classes were incredible. THAT was my inspiration. I wanted to ensure that my own students had that same kind of experience in my classroom.
Now, many decades after graduating from high school, I was able to start my own theater along with my husband. This is something I had always thought about doing, but now it was a reality. As a tribute to my drama teacher we named our scholarship after her: The Mary Pat Sutherland Scholarship Fund. With this we strive to provide the funds to help families to enroll their child(ren) in our theater classes.
So here I am today. Over 30 years of experience under my belt as an actor, dancer, director, choreographer, and teacher. All of this because of an extraordinary teacher I was blessed to cross paths with way back in high school. Mrs. Sutherland passed away on December 31, 1990, after a long battle with cancer. She was 43 years old. Gone much too soon. But her legacy certainly lives on in so many of us who had the privilege of working with her and knowing her. As I look up to Heaven on this day of her birth I say, “THANK YOU, Mrs. Sutherland, for showing me YOUR world.”
