Vermont Roots and Wings Alliance Providing Vermont Treatment Court Participants Support to Grow Roots... and Wings to Fly

The mission of Vermont Roots and Wings Alliance is to improve the outcomes of Treatment Courts in Vermont by providing support for basic needs and access to resources that will assist participants suffering from the impact of systemic poverty, generational trauma, and substance use disorders by helping remove the barriers to participating in Treatment Court. Additionally, we will increase awareness and support for treatment courts through community outreach and legislative advocacy.

With Treatment Court operating in Washington County, we are delighted to see good news being shared! Way to go Working Fields and The University of Vermont Health Network - Central Vermont Medical Center

The model could be “one of the rare win-wins that happen where we’re able to support our community and folks who are in recovery to find gainful employment,” said one of the executives involved in the program.

Meet Sarah Reed, one of the founding creators of Vermont Roots & Wings Alliance.

Sarah Reed joined the Chittenden County Public Defender’s Office as a Staff Attorney in 2007. She took over the role of defense counsel on the Chittenden County Treatment Court dockets in 2009 and has been involved with the programs since. She helped to found Vermont Roots and Wings Alliance in 2020.

“Treatment Court participants are special people. They have been pushed down by life over and over, but still have the courage to keep getting up and trying again. I assisted in establishing VT Roots and Wings because my work in the Treatment Courts has exposed me to the number of funding and programmatic gaps that Treatment Courts cannot fill alone. Vermont Roots and Wings Alliance will fill the gaps and provide an extra hand to a people who very often have no familial or social supports they can call on in times of need.”

We are tremendously grateful for Sarah's persistence, perseverance and passion, as are her clients and community partners she works with every day. She is one of the reasons successful second chances are realized by many in the Burlington community, and beyond.
