Join us in welcoming our 3 new Restorative Services Coordinators!

And rounding out with Josef Lavanway, who started as a panel volunteer before progressing to panel coordinator and victim liaison to the Director of the former South Burlington CJC, will continue his work with the Chittenden County CJC in South Burlington.

Here's a little more about Josef in his own words:

"Born and raised in Vermont I consider Vermont to be where my roots started and have continued to grow. Having spent my life in Chittenden County I am deeply connected with the county and have lived in Burlington, Essex and currently in South Burlington.

I am moved by the field Restorative Justice and bring over 10 years of experience. Starting as a panel volunteer, progressing to being a panel coordinator and victim liaison to most recently being the Director of the South Burlington Community Justice Center I am honored to be a part of the team at the CCCJC. The ability to foster accountability, repair, relationship building and growth in the community has been dear to me and is innate to my core as a human being.

I have a deep love for everything Vermont. I enjoy spending time in nature doing just about anything and spending time with my family and our wonderful dogs."

Join us in welcoming our 3 new Restorative Services Coordinators!

Next up is Antonio Rogers, who will be based in Burlington. Here's a little more about Antonio in his own words:

"Growing up in a military family allowed a younger me to develop a picture of the world aided by lens of various cultures, countries and experiences. The one consistent element of my life was getting to return to Vermont for a few summers. I have always felt more at peace here and have been living here and working on putting down roots here since 2019.

I believe that spending time working in both residential therapy, and teaching parkour and gymnastics has helped me garner an understanding of how to help strengthen, unify and regulate both the mind and body. I have a deep appreciation for pedagogy after spending my early childhood in a Montessori classroom, getting my degree in education, and spending time training with my martial arts masters while living in China. There were huge benefits being able to practice student lead learning, and also experience the benefits of trusting the lessons and path that instructor chose for me.

I believe that restorative justice is the healthiest practice in helping people navigate the repair work they can do with their community and also with themselves. Practices of reflection and mindfulness can help people start to approach the world with a sense of calm and peace which can in turn lead wanting to connect with others and the environment around them."

Join us in welcoming our 3 new Restorative Services Coordinators!

First up is Faith Brutus, who will be based in Williston. Here's a little more about Faith in her own words:

"I am originally from Brooklyn New York but found a 2nd home here in Vermont when I graduated with my BSW and MSW. I have learned to call Social Work my 3rd home and have found the work being done very empowering, uplifting and life changing in the best ways.

I am a firm believer in second chances, and believe people are more than their mistakes. I also believe that people are not inherently bad rather that they are products of their environment and the love they were able to get at home. Restorative Justice allows people to take accountability, repair the harm done while also giving validity to one’s own struggle and needs. The work being done here at CCCJC opens the door for folks to engage and be wrapped around in community focused services and supports. Compassion, community, and accountability are all hallmarks that the CCCJC and I live and do the work by.

In time away from work you can find me behind a book, crocheting, singing, baking / trying to make new food or just chatting away about the intricacy's life brings all our way."

The Chittenden County Community Justice Center (CJC) is looking for members of its new Community Advisory Board (CAB). Join representatives from throughout the county to assist in identifying CJC priorities, raising awareness about community and restorative justice, and gathering input from the community regarding the work of the CJC. We’re looking for a diverse set of people with a variety of experiences to lend their voices and enthusiasm.

This will be the first CAB of its kind with a set of draft by-laws to begin with and modify as the group sees fit. In-person meetings will be held around the county and led by two co-chairs nominated and selected by the group.

Time commitment: roughly two hours/meeting for six meetings/year

Who we’re looking for: anyone 16 and up who is interested in non-punitive methods of seeking repair and accountability related to harm, crime and conflict in our communities. We’re especially interested in those who can bring diverse representation--geographic, racial, cultural, gender, lived experience in the criminal legal system, ability, etc.—to help bring an anti-racist lens to the work. You will be serving as an ambassador for the CJC and advising the director in future visioning work of the organization.

It's official: we are the Chittenden County Community Justice Center! (c-c-c-jay-c? triple-c-jay-c? we'll try it all on and see what sticks)

The CCCJC is a collaborative partnership between the municipalities of Chittenden County to provide restorative and alternative justice opportunities to the communities we serve.

Last year, the Williston Community Justice Center, South Burlington Community Justice Center, Essex Community Justice Center, and Burlington Community Justice Center began the process of transitioning into a centralized, county-wide CJC. The CCCJC is the administrative hub for programs like Pre-Charge Diversion, Court Diversion, Reparative Probation, Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), Parallel Justice, and the Conflict Assistance Program.

In addition to the new office located on the ground floor of the Post Apartments building in Burlington, the CCCJC will have offices in the Costello Courthouse and the police departments of Burlington, South Burlington, and Williston. We will also continue to meet with participants and volunteers in local and accessible spaces throughout the county.

Welcome Cait Tschida, one of our two new Reentry and Restorative Process Specialists!

Here's a little about Cait in her own words:

"Growing up in rural Minnesota taught me to appreciate the opportunities of support a community can give. My introduction to Restorative Justice came through an undergrad elective and it truly opened my eyes to the kind of power that a supportive community can give any individual in a situation involving harm. Through my graduate work in Restorative Justice at Vermont Law & Graduate School I continued to learn the best ways to support and engage with my community in an uplifting, proactive way. I believe that by providing an intentional space we build a foundation for empowerment that nurtures accountability and repair with dignity for all involved.

My professional background also includes work as a sexual assault advocate and programmer, work with young adults in a residential-therapeutic program and as a bookseller at an independent bookstore.

I often spend my free time reading just about anything put in front of me, soaking up the sun, and engaging in whatever new thing has caught my interest whether that be food, crafts, activities or classes!"

Welcome Rob Strasenburgh, one of our two new Reentry and Restorative Process Specialists!

Here's a little about Rob in his own words:

"I was born and raised in Rochester New York and in my 20's found home in Vermont. I was drawn to restorative justice through the belief that wanting to become the best versions of ourselves is a shared human experience, and meaningful growth is possible when people are met with dignity, respect, and opportunity.

Through my work and life experience, I have learned that everyone wants to be seen, heard, and treated with fairness and respect. When space is created for accountability and compassion, healing and positive changes can take root. I believe all people deserve the chance to improve their lives and move forward with purpose.

I believe deeply in the power of community and connection. I am honored to be part of the work that supports individuals as they rebuild trust, strengthen relationships, and create new opportunities for themselves.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing upright bass and listening to many different genres of music. I enjoy improvisation in art, comedy, and all forms of creative expression. I also enjoy cooking and spending time outdoors."
