🚒 What a great day at our inaugural CCFD Open House! Thank you to everyone who joined us today at Fire Station 37 in Millbrae!

We had a fantastic turnout, with families from across Burlingame, Hillsborough, and Millbrae enjoying an afternoon of activities, demonstrations, and opportunities to meet our firefighters and learn more about what we do!

From community partner booths and Touch-a-Truck to tours of our Urban Search & Rescue vehicle, rope rescue and ladder throw demonstrations, hands-on fire extinguisher training with CERT, fire prevention activities, and our Kids Corner, there was something for everyone!

A huge thank you to our CCFD firefighters and staff, CERT volunteers, and community partners who helped make our first Open House possible. We couldn’t have done it without your hard work and support!

It was wonderful connecting with so many members of our community, sharing fire safety and emergency preparedness information, and giving everyone a closer look at their fire department. We look forward to seeing you again at future events! ❤️

⛑️ How do you care for multiple patients when help and resources are limited? That’s exactly what our CERT trainees explored tonight during Class 4 of Fall CERT Basic Training!

Continuing our disaster medical operations training, tonight’s class built on the lifesaving interventions learned last session, focusing on putting those skills into action during a mass casualty incident. Trainees learned how to triage patients, establish treatment areas, conduct head-to-toe assessments, and document patient care and tracking.

Through hands-on practice, simulated exercises, and tabletop activities, participants applied these skills while learning how to manage multiple patients when resources are limited.

🚑 Fall CERT Training continues tonight in Burlingame!

We’re kicking off Week 2 with Disaster Medical Operations, focusing tonight on treating life-threatening conditions after a disaster.

Trainees are learning and getting hands-on practice with:
🩸 Controlling severe bleeding with direct pressure and tourniquets
🫁 Opening and maintaining an airway
🩺 Recognizing and treating shock
🩹 Bandaging, splinting, and other essential patient-care skills

Another great night of building practical, hands-on skills to help our communities when it matters most!

CCFD CERT had a great time at today’s Millbrae Japanese Cultural Festival! 🇯🇵

This annual event is always a favorite. Our CERT volunteers connected with community members, shared emergency preparedness information, and put preparedness knowledge to the test with our CERT prize wheel. CCFD engine crews also stopped by throughout the day to connect with the community.

Knowing what to do before, during, and after a disaster shouldn't depend on the language you speak or the culture you come from. Sadly, vulnerable communities are too often overlooked when preparedness efforts don't account for the barriers they face. Mike Chuang, Central County Fire CERT Instructor, recognizes the importance of teaching CERT in Mandarin.

As Mike, puts it: "It's not just about teaching skills, it's about giving people the confidence and ability to act when every second counts." One way to do that? Delivering training in the participant's native language and making sure it's culturally relevant.

Our Fall CCFD CERT Basic Training is officially underway in Burlingame!

More than 35 participants are taking part in the eight-class series, building the skills to better prepare themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods for emergencies.

Tonight’s Class #2 focused on Fire Safety & Utility Control, including a hands-on fire extinguisher practical with Engine 33. Participants practiced safe extinguisher use and learned more about fire safety and utility control following a disaster.

Over the next few weeks, the class will continue working through the CERT curriculum before putting everything together at Skills Day and graduation on October 24.

Thank you to the Engine 33 crew, our CERT volunteers, and CCFD Emergency Management staff for supporting tonight’s training!

This National CERT Week, September 20–26, 2026, we’re celebrating the dedicated CERT volunteers who train, prepare, and serve across Burlingame, Hillsborough, and Millbrae. 🎉

From hands-on training and exercises to community outreach, preparedness education, and special events, our volunteers put in the time to help build a more prepared and resilient community.

With continued growth and even more opportunities to train and get involved, CCFD CERT is on track for another successful year!

Tonight, 20+ CCFD CERT members from Burlingame, Hillsborough, and Millbrae came together for our September Team Meeting focused on the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).

Kaz Chiao and Bill Reilly walked members through how today’s emergency management systems evolved, from the development of FIRESCOPE in California to lessons learned from the 1991 Oakland Hills fire and the September 11 attacks. Members then explored key ICS/NIMS terminology, command structures, and coordination principles, how they apply to CERT operations, and concepts that will help prepare them to complete FEMA’s IS-100 and IS-700 courses.

Another great night of learning and strengthening our readiness across all three cities!
