The BHS is a small historical society, comprised of people that are interested in preserving the area’s history – history of its people, its places, and its personalities. The Society’s members are young and old, long term residents and new imports to the community, professional and amateur historians, and people that just like to get together and learn something about history.

Our October 25, 3 pm meeting at Pohick library will be on the topic Yankee Doodle Spies: Historical fiction and Research presented by S.W. O"Connell who is a retired U.S. Army officer and Senior Defense Intelligence Executive.

Hogsheads (large casks) of to***co were rolled downhill to ships on roads referred to as rolling roads. The Rolling Road in our area “ended” at Pohick warehouses.

Coffer Woods Road was named for the Coffer family. Thomas Withers Coffer served on the Truro Parish Vestry. His grandson, Thomas Coffer served during the war of 1812. His daughter Hannah married Silas Burke. Other members of the family were also involved in the area’s history.

Braddock Road was named after General Braddock who took a troop of British soldiers, including George Washington, to Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. Current thought is that this was NOT the actual route that the General and his troops took but that his route may have followed Route 7.

The first Burke’s Station post office was established in 1852.

As the population of the area grew, Burke residents formed the Burke Communities Civic Association in 1947 to meet area needs. Its first goal, establishing the BVFRD, was achieved with its incorporation on January 26, 1948.

Volunteers built Burke’s first firehouse in the spring of 1948, a one-and-a-half story cinder-block building
