The BHS is a small historical society, comprised of people that are interested in preserving the area’s history – history of its people, its places, and its personalities. The Society’s members are young and old, long term residents and new imports to the community, professional and amateur historians, and people that just like to get together and learn something about history.

June 13, 1951 The Burke site was selected and a notice posted in the Burke Post Office which stated that the federal government was condemning over 4,000 acres of land for a new airport. Construction of the airport was to begin in 1952.

June 13, 1959 A government land auction was held in Burke 8 years to the date after the first public notice placed in the Burke Post Office. Land purchased by the County was obtained at about fifty percent of the market value. Land developers paid on average $1,150 an acre.

Volunteers built Burke’s first firehouse in the spring of 1948, a one-and-a-half story cinder-block building. The station siren was activated by the Fire Control Center in Fairfax and would alert volunteers to a call. The building served as the fire station until November 1963, when a new station was completed.

The Virginia Room was recently gifted this 1962 aerial of Kamp Washington in Fairfax, VA. Does anyone know why there was a Conestoga wagon at the intersection?

Dress up in period costume, try your hand at signing your own "John Hancock, enjoy quill pen writing, and make colonial-era crafts. Join us for the City of Fairfax library's summer kickoff event!

BHS usually holds a monthly meeting on a Sunday at 3 at Pohick Regional Library. Meetings are free and all are welcome. The topics cover a wide variety of local history topics.
