The Burke VFW and Legion held their annual US Flag Disposal Ceremony on June 14th, 2026 on the south side of the Burke VFW building. There were about 15 people in attendance. Eight large tubs holding approximately 400 flags were properly disposed of. It took about 20 minutes. The Burke Fire Department and the Burke Police Chief were on hand to assist.

Check out what is now the largest flag in South Dakota. Located in Fairfax, the massive 40-by-80-foot hand-sewn nylon flag flies from a 140-foot pole—both manufactured in Dallas, Texas—and is large enough to cover an entire high school basketball court.
This Memorial Day, it stands as a powerful reminder of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, and the freedom their sacrifice continues to protect.
