Mrs. Shafer is a CTE Plant Science Instructor at BHS. One unique aspect of the BHS Plant and Soil Science program is the strong emphasis on hands-on, real-world learning through greenhouse production and floral design. Students are not just learning concepts in a classroom, they are actively growing, designing, and managing living plant systems that connect directly to industry practices.
Our program also offers a diverse pathway within Plant Science, allowing students to specialize in both greenhouse operations and floral design. This gives students the opportunity to explore multiple career avenues such as horticulture, retail floral design, event planning, and greenhouse management, while still building a strong foundation in plant and soil science.
Another unique feature is our integration of leadership and career development through FFA. Students participate in Leadership Development Events, Career Development Events, Flower Cup competitions, and supervised agricultural experiences, which allow them to apply classroom knowledge in competitive and professional environments.
We also emphasize industry readiness through practicum experiences, where students gain real-world exposure to agricultural workplaces and expectations. This helps students build confidence, responsibility, and employability skills before graduating.
Our CTE instructors bring valuable experience from their respective industries to share with students. BHS offers a wide variety of CTE programs designed to help students explore career pathways and develop workforce-ready skills.
