Mrs. Shafer is a CTE Plant Science Instructor at BHS. One unique aspect of the BHS Plant and Soil Science program is the strong emphasis on hands-on, real-world learning through greenhouse production and floral design. Students are not just learning concepts in a classroom, they are actively growing, designing, and managing living plant systems that connect directly to industry practices.

Our program also offers a diverse pathway within Plant Science, allowing students to specialize in both greenhouse operations and floral design. This gives students the opportunity to explore multiple career avenues such as horticulture, retail floral design, event planning, and greenhouse management, while still building a strong foundation in plant and soil science.

Another unique feature is our integration of leadership and career development through FFA. Students participate in Leadership Development Events, Career Development Events, Flower Cup competitions, and supervised agricultural experiences, which allow them to apply classroom knowledge in competitive and professional environments.

We also emphasize industry readiness through practicum experiences, where students gain real-world exposure to agricultural workplaces and expectations. This helps students build confidence, responsibility, and employability skills before graduating.

Our CTE instructors bring valuable experience from their respective industries to share with students. BHS offers a wide variety of CTE programs designed to help students explore career pathways and develop workforce-ready skills. Mr. Lewis is a CTE Welding Instructor at BHS. "I believe that our ability to train and certify on-site without students ever needing to step foot in a technical college is an amazing aspect of my program. We are also versatile in the fact that we can fabricate so many objects in-house with BISD equipment. That gives us the edge!"

Career and Technical Education (CTE) plays a vital role at BHS and schools across Texas by preparing students for success beyond graduation through hands-on learning and skill development.

Just a reminder:

Mr. Lewis and I will be out of pocket beginning today through next week. If you need anything during that time, please be patient with us, as responses may be delayed. I know I will be in an area with limited cell service and may not have reliable access to messages.

We hope everyone has a wonderful summer break! I will be back in Burkburnett on June 15th and will respond to any messages as soon as possible upon my return.

Thank you for your understanding, and have a safe and enjoyable summer! โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฝ

FFA Word of the Year: Anchored

This year, Burkburnett FFA Officer Team chose the word โ€œAnchoredโ€ as our Word of the Year because it represents the values, traditions, and purpose that keep us grounded no matter where life takes us. As FFA members, we are constantly growing, facing challenges, traveling to competitions, and pursuing new opportunities. Through all of those experiences, it is important that we remain anchored in our character, leadership, work ethic, and faith in one another.

Being anchored means staying true to who we are and what we stand for. It means remaining committed to serving our chapter, school, and community while holding firmly to the principles of agricultural education and the FFA motto. An anchor provides stability during rough waters, and in the same way, our values provide strength and direction when life becomes challenging.

As Burkburnett FFA moves through this year, we strive to be Anchored in Purpose, Anchored in Leadership, and Anchored in Service. No matter how far we go or how much we achieve, we will remain grounded in the lessons weโ€™ve learned, the relationships weโ€™ve built, and the legacy we are creating together. Through every contest, project, show, and service opportunity, we will stay anchored to what matters most and continue building a stronger future for agriculture and our community.
