Burien’s Outdoor Explorers summer camp joined forces with King Conservation District (KCD) to provide paid environmental programming emphasizing restoration ecology, green careers and holistic land activities. For 8 days the youth explored Salmon Creek Ravine learning about the ecosystem services it provides to their communities and removed 800 square feet of common ivy and herb Robert to support restoring the health of the forest. The youth had the opportunity to meet several guest speakers who shared their expertise related to environmental topics, including stream health with Mountains to Sound Greenway, wildlife tracking with King Conservation District, ivy weaving with Burien Forest Steward Jeanne Salter and plant identification with Burien’s WCC environmental justice crew.

After the youth accumulated their newfound knowledge for two weeks, they had the opportunity to lead a community event for their friends and family that took place in the ravine on their last day. They demonstrated how to identify and make tea out of cedar and led an ivy weaving workshop.

This past June, Burien and SeaTac came together to celebrate the hard work of their Forest Stewards together. Connecting as neighboring cities, this gathering allowed Forest Stewards to meet, share experiences and build community. Burien was joined by Council Members Sarah Moore, Same, Mendez and Alex Andrade who heard some of their Forest Stewards hopes and dreams for local urban forests using a collaborative visioning board created during the event.

Now showing at the Burien Community Center: Tammie Dupuis
Exhibition Dates: August-September 2026

In Tammie’s words: "My practice investigates the ways artwork can be used to carry memory, history, and cultural meaning. Working across painting, textiles, wood, bone, hair, resin, ink, beads, and paper, I combine traditional hand processes with contemporary methods to examine significance through use, transformation, and time. I am interested in the ways physical materials can embody layered narratives.
Rather than illustrating specific histories, my work creates spaces where multiple systems of knowledge, making, and interpretation intersect. I treat materials as collaborators, allowing their inherent qualities, cultural associations, and histories to shape the work as much as my own interventions. Through repetition, accumulation, and careful attention to process, familiar forms are reconfigured into contemplative objects that invite close looking and sustained reflection."
