"Hey y’all,
(warning a long post and will continue in the comments)
Some of you may have met me while I was a dresser at starting back in 2016. I would say this job was a great opportunity for me to pick up and carry various skills that I still use as a Local 705 Costumer.
The job was physically demanding, where me and other dressers suffered injuries on the job. Many of us that cared about the costumes we took care of did whatever we could to make it work.
It felt satisfying to help a performer look good before their set and be able to relieve them by helping them get out quickly and safely as we can.
We also were expected to make quick repairs and handle many loads of laundry everyday while making sure we gave pleasant customer service to everyone we encountered.
I know that people don’t think we do as much cuz they catch us sitting while waiting for performers to finish their sets. There’s so much work to prep and wrap that is not seen.
The life of costume work is undervalued daily, but we all see how it influences in immersion for the performers and audiences. We even see it when fandom wear memorabilia of their favorite franchises and characters.
It breaks my heart to keep hearing how much push back has been getting asking for a living wage throughout their contract negotiations.
Currently, a starting dresser rate is $16.90 and after probation it becomes $17.67.
Starting out is slow and limited, so you barely get hours while they expect you to be fully available for them.
From what I’ve heard after checking in with former coworkers, the environment hasn’t gotten better. They’re understaffed and everyone has been stretched thin to cover the various aspects needed throughout the park.
There are many people who take these jobs because they are passionate about costumes. There are many people who really care about Universal and yet their commitment is undervalued. Everyone that works at Universal Studios deserves a living wage.
