BGCA, DC and Discovery Education scaled the DC Superpowered Storytellers Program! At Boys & Girls Clubs, art is a powerful tool for youth development. Did you know 72% of Club kids can communicate their thoughts and feelings through art, while 55% are interested in exploring future careers in the arts?
DC Superpowered Storytellers gives youth the opportunity to do both by stepping into the world of comics. Through hands-on activities, Club kids build storytelling skills, participate in events like Batman Day, and explore career possibilities through experiences such as visiting the Warner Bros. studio lot. Club staff also receive training to help bring youth stories to life through illustration techniques and comic book components.
The Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley was one of the first hubs of DC Superpowered Storytellers. Leaders immediately recognized the value of a program that blended creativity, literacy and the excitement of the DC universe.
Hands on activities allowed members to think critically, collaborate with peers and explore new forms of self-expression while creating stories inspired by their own experiences.
Following the success of the pilot, DC Superpowered Storytellers is now available to schools and Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide, providing lesson plans, activities and training materials that help more youth build confidence and spark imagination.
The partnership also creates unique opportunities for youth to explore careers in entertainment. This summer, DC President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee spoke with Burbank Club youth about storytelling, illustration and careers in comics.
On June 10, 2026, DC invited more than 230 youth from Los Angeles community organizations, including nearly 80 from Burbank and Pasadena Clubs, to a special Studio Day on the Warner Bros. lot. Youth toured the studio, visited the Superman Experience and participated in creative activities, including designing comic book covers and a masterclass with Jim Lee. We are incredibly grateful for this partnership and the life-changing opportunities it continues to provide for our youth.
